More than 220 passengers stranded due to heavy snowfall along the Mid-Hill Highway have been successfully rescued after authorities cleared the blocked road section. The incident occurred at Patihalne, located along the border of Baglung and Rukum East, where continuous snowfall since Friday night caused severe obstruction.
According to officials, the heavy accumulation of snow rendered the roadway impassable by Saturday morning, leaving multiple vehicles and passengers stuck in the affected stretch.
Coordinated Rescue Operation Launched
A joint rescue operation was carried out by the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police. With the support of bulldozers and heavy equipment, the security personnel worked to remove snow and reopen the road.
Assistant Chief District Officer of Rukum East, Samir Gautam, confirmed that the rescue teams acted swiftly upon receiving information about the stranded passengers. “We mobilized immediately with security personnel and equipment from Bhume Rural Municipality to clear the road,” he said.
Vehicles and Passengers Affected
Authorities reported that passengers traveling in seven buses, ten motorcycles, and one jeep were caught in the disruption. All stranded individuals were safely rescued and allowed to continue their journey once the road was cleared.
Road Clearance and Safety Advisory
Officials stated that approximately three kilometers of the road along the district border were cleared of snow to restore traffic movement. However, travelers have been urged to exercise caution and check weather and road conditions before embarking on their journeys. “We request all travelers to plan their trips only after assessing weather conditions, as snowfall can cause sudden disruptions,” Gautam added.
Travel Advisory for Key Routes
Meanwhile, Chief of the Area Police Office Burtibang, Inspector Tilak Manandhar, noted that while snowfall occurred in the Baglung section, transportation had not been completely halted there. He advised vehicles traveling from Kathmandu, Pokhara, and other major cities to destinations such as Rukum, Rolpa, Jajarkot, Dolpa, Salyan, and Dailekh to proceed only after confirming road conditions.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, warning that ongoing winter weather conditions could lead to further disruptions in high-altitude and hilly regions. Travelers are advised to remain updated and prioritize safety when planning travel through affected areas.
