A chemical leak at an aircraft engineering facility near Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has caused illness in 39 employees, as reported by Al Jazeera, citing local officials.
The Fire and Rescue Department responded to the incident, which took place away from the main passenger terminal, confirming the leak of methyl mercaptan gas, commonly mixed with liquefied petroleum gas. Muhammad Noor Khairi Samsudin, a local rescue official, detailed that the affected individuals experienced dizziness and nausea.
“One patient has been hospitalized, while fourteen others received treatment at the airport’s air disaster unit,” stated Muhammad Noor. The incident involved employees from three different companies working at the facility.
Authorities have assured the public that the gas leak poses no threat to passenger safety or flight operations at KLIA. The police have identified a neglected skid tank, unused for nine years, as the source of the leak.
Efforts are underway to investigate the incident thoroughly and implement measures to prevent future occurrences, ensuring the continued safety of airport operations and personnel.
