Recent heavy rainfall has caused significant damage to critical infrastructure in Ghami, under the jurisdiction of Ward No. 2, Damodarkunda Rural Municipality. The incessant downpour resulted in the collapse of a canal and a wooden bridge over the Ghami River, crucial for accessing the route to Dhakmar.
Thukten Chiring Gurung, the Ward Chairperson of Damodarkunda Rural Municipality Ward No. 2, reported that approximately 20 meters of the canal, part of an irrigation project, was washed away by the floodwaters. Following the collapse of the wooden bridge, residents and visitors intending to traverse to Dhakmar are urged to seek alternative routes due to the risks posed by the unstable conditions.
“The damage extends beyond infrastructure alone,” stated Lomsang Chhompel Bisht, Chairperson of Damodarkunda Rural Municipality, highlighting the immediate need for repair works funded by the Disaster Management Fund. Over 57 households in Dhakmar, the central hub for Ghami Ward, are directly impacted by the disruption in connectivity caused by the damaged infrastructure.
The aftermath of the flood has severely affected agricultural lands spanning over 1200 Ropanis (approximately 12 hectares), crucial for cultivating crops like barley, wheat, maize, and potatoes. Local farmers face considerable challenges in ensuring irrigation for their produce, further exacerbating the agricultural impact of the disaster.
Efforts are underway to swiftly commence repair works on the canal and bridge, ensuring the safety and convenience of residents and tourists alike. In the interim, authorities advise all travelers to seek alternative routes to Dhakmar until normalcy is restored in the affected areas.
