CM Kamal Bahadur Shah Urges Strong Action for Proper Use and Preservation of Infrastructure

Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah of Sudurpashchim Province emphasized the importance of not just building infrastructure but also ensuring its proper utilization and preservation. Speaking at the inauguration of a multi-purpose inclusive safe shelter in Tikapur Municipality-7, Kailali, he said that safeguarding public structures is a shared responsibility.

He pointed out that millions of rupees are wasted when infrastructures are built without proper planning. “Projects should be based on actual needs. Overspending in unnecessary areas leads to dissatisfaction, even with useful infrastructure,” he said.

For the upcoming fiscal year, CM Shah stated that the provincial government would not prioritize construction projects unless they are justified by necessity. “Only plans that demonstrate their importance will be budgeted. We will also ensure accountability for their use and preservation,” he added.

Highlighting the impact of the global economic downturn, Shah warned that the province’s budget could shrink by Rs. 2–3 billion, calling the situation challenging and urging unity among all development partners to face it effectively. He also urged preparedness, noting that the Terai districts in the province face a high risk of floods, while hill districts are more prone to earthquakes.

The newly inaugurated shelter was built for Rs. 12.18 million under a community-based disaster risk reduction project, funded by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and World Vision Japan, and implemented in partnership with World Vision International Nepal and CSSD (Conscious Society for Social Development). The facility will serve as a safe shelter during floods and can also be used in other disasters.
