The Koshi Province Government has intensified its efforts to mark Tourism Year 2082 BS with an aim to boost the province’s tourism sector through comprehensive development and promotion programs. With a vision to position Koshi as a leading tourist destination in Nepal, the government has rolled out various initiatives and activities to attract both domestic and international visitors.
Since the official commencement of Tourism Year 2082, the districts within Koshi Province have witnessed a significant increase in tourism-related activities. This surge in engagement has not only enhanced the vibrancy of the region but also contributed to a steady rise in the number of visitors. Public enthusiasm, coupled with the proactive involvement of the private sector, has created a promising environment for the tourism industry to flourish.
As part of its strategic plan, the Koshi Province Government has set an ambitious target to welcome 1.5 million tourists, including domestic travelers and international guests, for the year. This goal reflects a strong commitment to revitalizing the tourism industry, which was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tourism entrepreneurs and hoteliers across the province have expressed their excitement and optimism regarding the prospects created by the Tourism Year declaration. Many believe that this initiative will catalyze the tourism sector back to its pre-pandemic glory, fostering economic growth and creating new opportunities for businesses in the region.

Chairman of the Hotel Association of Bhedetar, Tumraj Limbu, conveyed his satisfaction with the province’s initiative. “We are extremely pleased. The Tourism Year will revitalize the hotel business and open new avenues for the hospitality industry,” he said. According to Limbu, there is already a notable increase in the number of hotel bookings and tourist inquiries, indicating that the campaign is gaining positive momentum.
The Koshi Province, particularly its districts like Ilam, Dharan, Dhankuta, and Bhedetar, has traditionally been a favored destination for Indian tourists. These areas offer a blend of natural beauty, cool climates, and rich cultural experiences that resonate deeply with visitors from neighboring Indian states, especially Bihar and West Bengal.
Kamlesh Sharma, an Indian tourist who recently visited Kanyam in Ilam, shared his delightful experience. “I truly enjoyed Nepal. It is even more beautiful than I had heard,” he said. “We initially planned for a short trip, but after experiencing the serene beauty and hospitality here, we have decided to stay for a week.” Sharma’s sentiment reflects the growing appreciation among international tourists for Koshi’s natural and cultural offerings.
Understanding the importance of adequate infrastructure to support the expected influx of tourists, local authorities and entrepreneurs have made significant strides in improving accommodation facilities. Hotels, resorts, and community-based homestays have been upgraded to offer better services, ensuring that visitors enjoy a comfortable and memorable stay.

Homestay programs, especially in rural and semi-urban areas like Namje Thumki and Bhedetar, have been emphasized to provide tourists with authentic local experiences. These homestays not only enhance the tourist experience but also contribute directly to the livelihoods of local communities, thereby fostering inclusive economic growth.
The Tourism Year 2082 is also expected to rejuvenate other sectors linked to tourism, including transportation, handicrafts, and local agriculture. Transport entrepreneurs have reported an increase in vehicle rentals, and local markets are witnessing a surge in the sale of traditional handicrafts and organic products.
Private sector involvement has been crucial to the success of the campaign. Entrepreneurs, hoteliers, and business associations are actively collaborating with the provincial government to organize cultural festivals, tourism fairs, and promotional events aimed at showcasing the diverse attractions of Koshi Province.
According to Rajendra Raut, President of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Koshi Province, “The Tourism Year 2082 will not only revitalize the tourism sector but also stimulate the overall economy of the province. Every stakeholder must contribute from their end to ensure its success.”

The Tourism Year campaign was officially inaugurated in a grand ceremony at Tehrathum’s Teenjure Milke, known as the capital of rhododendrons, on Chaitra 27. The event was graced by Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh, who emphasized the importance of tourism for national development and encouraged collaborative efforts to make the year a landmark success.
Bhawish Shrestha, Co-Coordinator of Koshi Tourism Year 2082, outlined the province’s focus on promoting religious, natural, and cultural tourism. He noted that tourists interested in education, health, and sports tourism are also increasingly visiting the region. Shrestha further added that the variety in Koshi’s tourism offerings makes it an ideal destination for diverse groups of travelers.
From the lush tea gardens of Ilam to the vibrant cultural sites of Dharan and the tranquil hill stations of Dhankuta and Bhedetar, Koshi Province boasts an array of attractions that promise unique and memorable experiences for tourists. As the year progresses, the government and private sector hope to sustain and build upon the early momentum to meet and even exceed their goal of 1.5 million visitors.
Tourism Year 2082 is more than just a campaign; it is a strategic movement aimed at placing Koshi Province firmly on the map as a must-visit destination in Nepal. With growing tourist enthusiasm, improved infrastructure, and strong partnerships between the government and private sector, the future of tourism in Koshi Province looks brighter than ever.
