The Bhujel community of Tanahun is currently engaged in a campaign to establish its cultural identity. By raising funds, it is working to preserve its traditional attire, language, religion, and culture. As part of this campaign, a week-long cultural preservation program has been conducted in Tanahun. The program was jointly organized by the Bhujel Women’s Society Central Executive Committee and the Bhujel District Committee. According to Resham Bhujel, head of the Language, Rituals, and Culture Department of the Bhujel Society Nepal Central Committee, the campaign was initiated because of the recent cultural decline observed within the minority Bhujel community, aiming to protect and pass on their cultural identity.
Under the campaign, 25 youths were trained in cultural preservation. Basundhara Gharti Bhujel, Chairperson of the Bhujel Women’s Society Central Committee, stated that the Bhujel community has distinct religion, rituals, culture, language, attire, and customs. She mentioned that the campaign was launched as many youths in the community have recently started to abandon their traditions and culture.
Kala Bhujel, Central Secretary of the Bhujel Women’s Society, said that the training program was conducted to teach the younger generation about their original traditions, skills, rituals, and language, as there is concern that losing culture means losing identity. According to the organizers, experts from across the country from east to west were invited to provide training on the Bhujel community’s customs related to birth, marriage, death, and festivals.
