A newly allotted budget of NPR 10 million for the fiscal year 2081/82 is intended to be used for the reconstruction of the stronghold at the historic Upardang Gadhi, which is situated in Ichchha Kamana Rural Municipality-7. The physical construction of the fort will be restored to archeological standards as it is now in a dilapidated state.
The Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality Chairman, Mr. Dan Bahadur Gurung, stated that the preservation of the fort’s historical authenticity will be given top priority during the restoration process. To accommodate tourists and photographers, planned repairs include repairing entrances, building a wooden bridge, setting up visitor waiting facilities and restrooms, and providing electrical connections.
Additionally, Mr. Gurung emphasized the municipality’s continued search for cannons that were formerly stationed at Upardang. The Department of Archaeology and the Nepali Army have begun talks over the recovery and possible exhibition of these historical items.
Originally built during the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1800 under the patronage of Bahadur Shah, son of Shatru Bhanjan Shah, Upardang served as the headquarters of Chitwan until 1960. The purpose of the construction was to safeguard and unite the region.
