Historic Mathagadhi Park in Palpa: Nepal’s Emerging Gem of Cultural and Heritage Tourism

In Palpa’s Mathagadhi Rural Municipality-5, the recently constructed Mathagadhi Park is being marketed as a historical and cultural tourist destination. The park was built on the site of the historic Mathagadhi Fort, which was a key location during the Anglo-Nepal War, with assistance from the Nepal Army’s Mid-Western Headquarters.

The fort has great historical and cultural significance because Colonel Ujir Singh Thapa used it to repel British forces. The region is important for pilgrims and history buffs alike because of the spiritual appeal added by the legends surrounding Bhure Raja and the Kalika Devi Temple’s divine origin.

The site provides visitors with an immersive experience by showcasing traditional weapons and wartime relics, trench structures, and connections to Nepal’s unification era. By conserving the fort’s legacy and highlighting its distinctive fusion of history, culture, and legend, local officials and the army hope to draw both domestic and foreign tourists. It is anticipated that the park will increase tourism in the area, enhancing local identity and providing opportunities for heritage-based and educational travel.
