The Maiyung Tyamke Salpa Silichung Tourism Promotion Center has developed the ‘Greater Mundhum Trail’, a unique trekking route connecting Khuwalung in the eastern Terai to the base of Mount Everest (Chomolungma), aiming to provide a culturally and geographically rich trekking experience across the Terai, hills, and Himalayan region of Nepal.

According to the Center’s Chairperson, Ramesh Kumar Rai, the trail has been divided into three distinct segments to highlight the natural and ethnic diversity of the region. The Lower Mundhum Trail stretches from Khuwalung in Chataradham to Tawa Vanjyang in Khotang. The Main Mundhum Trail continues from Tawa Vanjyang to Salpa Silichung in Bhojpur. Finally, the Upper Mundhum Trail extends from Chheskam in Solukhumbu all the way to Everest.

“This trail connects the Terai, hills, and Himalayas, and aims to become Nepal’s first major tourist trekking route that captures global attention,” said Rai. The route was finalized after extensive exploration in coordination with the Mahakulung Rural Municipality of Solukhumbu. The team identified viable walking paths, suitable accommodation spots, and significant natural and cultural highlights along the trail.

Trekkers on the Greater Trail can expect a diverse experience, from the warm lowland breezes of the Terai to the snowy peaks of the Himalayas. The trail also offers a glimpse of Nepal’s rich biodiversity from the endangered wild buffalo (Arna) of Koshi Tappu to yaks, sheep, and other mountain wildlife.
