China has reported a substantial increase in the number of inbound trips made by foreigners, thanks in part to the country’s transit visa-free policies. The National Immigration Administration (NIA) announced on July 5 that China recorded 14.64 million inbound trips by foreigners in the first half of this year, marking a remarkable 152.7 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Currently, foreign nationals from 54 countries are eligible for 72/144-hour transit visa-free policies, which are effective at 38 ports across 18 provincial-level regions in China. These policies have significantly contributed to the surge in inbound trips.
According to the NIA, the number of visa-free entries by foreigners exceeded 8.54 million from January to June. This figure represents 52 percent of all inbound trips and shows a year-on-year increase of 190.1 percent.
The transit visa-free policy allows eligible foreign nationals to enter China without a visa for up to 72 or 144 hours, depending on their point of entry, provided they are transiting to a third country. This policy has made China a more attractive destination for short-term visits and stopovers, boosting the country’s tourism and business travel sectors.
The significant increase in inbound trips indicates a strong recovery in international travel to China, following the relaxation of travel restrictions and the implementation of favorable visa policies. The NIA’s data reflects China’s ongoing efforts to promote tourism and facilitate easier entry for foreign visitors.
