District Hotel Association Kathmandu Leads Tree Plantation Initiative on World Environment Day 2025

In celebration of World Environment Day 2025, a grand tree plantation program was organized today at the Bishnumati Corridor Link Road, Kathmandu, under the inspiring global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”. The event aimed to raise environmental awareness by planting 250 saplings, promoting urban greenery and a healthier future through community engagement.

Joint Initiative for a Greener Kathmandu

The event was jointly organized by District Hotel Association Kathmandu, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ward No. 19, Nepal-Greece Friendship and Cultural Association, and Nepal Khadgi Sewa Samiti. The collaborative spirit behind the event emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in addressing environmental issues such as plastic pollution and urban deforestation.

The plantation program witnessed enthusiastic participation from community members, local leaders, hoteliers, and environmental advocates, all united in their goal to create a greener and more sustainable urban environment.

Chief Guest Sirjana Singh Highlights Role of Women in Environmental Leadership

The program was held under the chief guestship of Sirjana Singh, former President of the Nepal Women’s Association. In her address, Singh highlighted the crucial role that women can play in driving environmental change. She applauded the organizers for bringing together diverse stakeholders for a cause that transcends sectors and backgrounds.

“Our fight against plastic pollution and environmental degradation must include strong participation from all sections of society, especially women, who are often the first to feel the effects of environmental challenges,” Singh emphasized.

Local Ward Leaders and Hotel Entrepreneurs in Full Support

Prominent ward representatives including Nhuchhe Kaji Maharjan, Chairperson of Kathmandu Ward No. 18, and Rajendra Manandhar, Chairperson of Ward No. 20, were present at the event, reflecting the strong support from local governance bodies.

Suresh Baral, President of District Hotel Association Kathmandu, welcomed attendees and stressed the role of the hospitality industry in promoting eco-friendly practices. He remarked, “As part of the tourism sector, it is our responsibility to ensure that the beauty of Kathmandu is preserved for both current and future visitors. Our commitment to sustainability begins with actions like today’s plantation drive.”

The event was also graced by Manoj Newa, President of the Nepal-Greece Friendship and Cultural Association, and Anjita Khadgi, President of the Nepal Khadgi Sewa Samiti. They reiterated their commitment to cultural cooperation and environmental preservation.

Founder Chairman and Executive Members Lend Active Support

Founder Chairman of District Hotel Business Association Kathmandu Shailesh Karki, along with various executive committee members and presidents from affiliated units of the District Hotel Association, were also actively involved in the program. Their participation added strength to the initiative and underscored the unity of the hotel sector in environmental matters.

Som Sapkota, advisor to the District Hotel Business Association Kathmandu, shared his thoughts on the occasion. “It was a privilege to be part of such a beautiful and impactful program. Planting trees is more than just adding greenery, it’s about restoring balance, inspiring hope, and taking shared responsibility for the Earth. Today’s event was a small but meaningful step in that direction,” he said.

Aligning with the Global Theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution”

The core theme of World Environment Day 2025, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” served as a powerful reminder throughout the event. The organizers and participants collectively pledged to reduce the use of single-use plastics and promote environmentally friendly alternatives.

The message resonated across all age groups and professions, showing that even the smallest of actions, such as refusing plastic bags or carrying reusable bottles, can make a significant difference in protecting the environment.

A Call for Continued Action

Organizers expressed their intention to make the tree plantation program a recurring effort, expanding it to more urban and peri-urban areas. The goal is not just to plant trees but to nurture a culture of environmental consciousness that encourages residents, businesses, and tourists to engage in sustainable practices.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks to all the participants and organizing partners. Special appreciation was extended to the Nepal-Greece Friendship and Cultural Association for their continued support in fostering environmental and cultural partnerships.

The success of the tree plantation drive organized by the District Hotel Association Kathmandu and its partners on World Environment Day 2025 sets an inspiring example of how tourism, culture, and local governance can come together to address critical environmental issues.

As the world grapples with the increasing consequences of plastic pollution and climate change, such localized actions rooted in community involvement offer a beacon of hope. Kathmandu, through initiatives like this, is making its mark not just as a cultural and tourist hub, but also as a city committed to environmental sustainability.
