Ichchhakamana Becomes a Hidden Gem for Summer Getaways

With the onset of scorching summer temperatures in the Terai plains, Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality in Chitwan is witnessing a significant increase in the number of domestic tourists flocking to its cool and serene hill regions.

Local attractions such as Urdangadhi, Lamo Jharana (Long Waterfall), Siraichuli, Hattibang village, Mayatar, Ghurkesh, and the revered Ichchhakamana Temple have become popular getaways for those seeking respite from the heat. According to former president of the Hotel Entrepreneurs’ Association, Dasiram Dhakal, the natural beauty of Ichchhakamana’s varied landscapes and the opportunity for water adventures in the Trishuli River have become key draws for domestic travelers.

“While the Terai region is sweltering with heat, here in Ichchhakamana it still feels cool, almost winter-like,” Dhakal remarked, highlighting the favorable climate conditions that are attracting increasing numbers of tourists.

Homestays Packed with Visitors

As temperatures soar across Nepal’s lowlands, homestays in areas such as Mayatar, Urdangadhi, Ghurkesh, and Hattibang are experiencing full bookings. Tika Gurung, who operates a homestay in Mayatar (Ichchhakamana Ward No. 2), expressed delight at the recent spike in tourist arrivals.

“Tourists visit throughout the year, but during the summer, we see a surge in domestic visitors,” Gurung said. He noted that last year in the month of Jestha (mid-May to mid-June), their homestay used to receive around 20 guests per day. This year, that number has more than doubled to about 50 daily visitors, with even higher turnout on Saturdays and public holidays.

Improved Infrastructure and Support for Homestays

Chairperson of Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality, Dan Bahadur Gurung, stated that the local government has been actively investing in tourism infrastructure and supporting the development of homestay services in the area.

“There are currently 14 homestays in operation in Ghurkesh and two in Mayatar,” he said, emphasizing the municipality’s efforts to improve facilities and create sustainable tourism opportunities.

The cool climate, stunning views of hills and valleys, and opportunities for trekking and river activities continue to make Ichchhakamana a favored summer destination for domestic tourists, especially as travel trends shift toward nature-based escapes over urban holidays.

As Ichchhakamana strengthens its reputation as a peaceful and scenic retreat, local tourism operators are hopeful that this trend will persist and further promote sustainable rural tourism in the region.
