Weather Alert: Heavy Rain Forecast for Select Provinces, Snowfall in Higher Elevations

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast that weather across Nepal will remain partly to generally cloudy today, with several provinces expected to receive significant rainfall. According to the latest update, there is a high possibility of heavy rainfall occurring at one or two places in Koshi, Madhesh, and Bagmati Provinces. This comes as monsoon conditions continue to dominate much of the country, with westerly and local winds also influencing weather patterns in some western areas.

Monsoon Winds Active in Eastern and Central Nepal

Currently, the monsoon winds are actively affecting parts of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces, bringing moisture-laden clouds and raising the likelihood of precipitation. A partial influence of westerly winds combined with local wind systems is being experienced in the western region, particularly in eastern Lumbini Province, contributing to cloud formation and intermittent rainfall in those areas. The ongoing monsoon season is expected to bring continued weather variability throughout the coming days.

Possibility of Snowfall in Mountain Regions

Besides rainfall, light snowfall is expected in several high-hilly and mountainous regions, especially in Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces. The forecast indicates a few places in these regions could experience light rain and snowfall due to the ongoing monsoon system interacting with colder high-altitude climates. Similar light precipitation may occur in one or two places in the high-hilly and mountainous areas of other provinces as well. Trekkers and travelers planning visits to higher altitudes are advised to take necessary precautions against cold and slippery conditions.

Cloudy Conditions to Persist Through the Night

As night falls, cloudy conditions are expected to persist across the country, with the likelihood of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in some places in Koshi, Madhesh, Gandaki, and Sudurpaschim Provinces. A few areas in other provinces may also see moderate precipitation during the night hours. The risk of heavy rainfall remains at one or two places, particularly in Koshi, Madhesh, Gandaki, and Sudurpaschim Provinces, prompting the authorities to issue alerts in potentially vulnerable zones.

Thunderstorms and Lightning Likely in Several Areas

The forecast includes a possibility of thunderstorms and lightning activity, which can increase the risk of landslides in hilly regions and affect local travel and transport. Lightning strikes during the monsoon season have historically caused damages to property and posed risks to human life. Residents are advised to stay indoors during such events and avoid open spaces, large trees, or using electronic devices during lightning storms.

Impact on Daily Life and Travel

The anticipated rainfall and cloud cover may affect air and road travel, especially in regions prone to heavy showers and low visibility. Air passengers are urged to check for flight status updates and plan accordingly, while those traveling by road should exercise caution due to the risk of slippery roads, falling rocks, and possible landslides in mountainous terrain.

Farmers, on the other hand, are expected to benefit from the timely rainfall, which supports crop irrigation, especially in paddy cultivation areas of the Terai. However, excessive or heavy rain may also pose a threat of waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas.

Public Advised to Remain Alert

In view of the fluctuating weather conditions, the Department has advised the public to remain alert and informed about local weather updates. People living in flood-prone and landslide-risk zones are urged to stay prepared and follow any advisories issued by the authorities. Rescue and emergency response teams are on standby in case of adverse weather-related incidents.

The ongoing monsoon season is expected to bring both opportunities and challenges across Nepal. While the rain will aid agriculture and cool down temperatures, it may also bring risks in the form of landslides, flooding, and transportation disruptions. Monitoring official weather updates and taking timely precautions will be key to minimizing any adverse effects.
