Jyamire Lake, located in Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City Ward No. 13, is gradually emerging as one of the most attractive destinations for domestic tourists in western Nepal. The lake, naturally nestled within a lush community forest area, is witnessing a growing influx of visitors, particularly during holidays and festivals.
Over 100 Tourists Daily During Holidays
According to Rina Basnet, Chairperson of the Jyamire Lake Community Consumer Group, the site draws over 100 domestic tourists daily during public holidays. On regular weekdays, the lake still sees an average of around 80 visitors. “Compared to normal days, the number of tourists increases significantly during holidays. People come here for boating, swimming, and to enjoy a peaceful retreat close to nature,” Basnet shared. The rise in footfall has not only promoted local tourism but has also opened opportunities for the economic upliftment of the surrounding communities.
A Lake Spanning 30 Hectares
Jyamire Lake covers an expansive 30 hectares of water area within a broader 483.5-hectare community forest. The lake’s natural beauty and serene surroundings make it an ideal destination for relaxation and outdoor activities. In recent years, the lake area has undergone beautification and small-scale infrastructure development aimed at boosting its tourism potential.
Chairperson Basnet confirmed that further infrastructure enhancements are in the pipeline. “To attract more visitors, we’ve introduced boating services and are planning to add more tourism-friendly facilities,” she noted.
Boating, Swimming, and Picnic – A Multi-Attraction Hub
One of the major attractions at Jyamire Lake is boating. Visitors can rent boats and enjoy a peaceful ride around the lake. Boat operator Aite BK, who manages the lake’s boating services, shared that tourists now regularly engage in boating and swimming activities. “We’ve provided life jackets to ensure safety while swimming and boating. People also come in groups for picnics, making the lake a full-day leisure spot,” he said.

According to BK, the popularity of boating surges during weekends and festive holidays. A boat ride costs NPR 100 per person, and the tour typically lasts between 15 to 40 minutes, depending on the selected route and pace.
Man-Made Enhancement to Preserve Natural Charm
Originally a natural water body, Jyamire Lake has been developed further through dam construction to increase its water retention and scenic value. “The lake has become more beautiful after the dam was built,” said one of the frequent visitors. “The peaceful environment and natural setting make it an ideal spot for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.”
Boating services were introduced not just to entertain tourists, but also to encourage repeat visits and longer stays, which in turn support local economic activities.
Rise in Local Economy and Tourism Business
As the lake gains traction as a tourist hotspot, local businesses around the area have started to see increased activity. Food stalls, local shops, and small guesthouses are benefiting from the steady stream of tourists. “With visitors coming from Dang, Butwal, Nepalgunj, and even Bardiya, there has been a visible boost in our local trade,” shared Aite BK. This steady influx of visitors is encouraging locals to consider tourism-based ventures and creating employment opportunities, particularly for youth and women in the area.

Call for Infrastructure Development
Despite its growing popularity, Jyamire Lake still lacks several basic amenities. Sanam DC, a resident of Ghorahi-10, emphasized the need for additional infrastructure such as rest shelters and clean drinking water. “During extreme heat or rainfall, it becomes difficult for tourists to find shelter. If basic facilities are added, it will not only improve the tourist experience but also contribute to long-term tourism promotion,” she said. DC believes that with proper investment, the lake can become one of the top nature-based tourism destinations in western Nepal.
Appeal for Government Support
Rekha KC, a local from Ghorahi-15, echoed similar sentiments and called on all three tiers of government, local, provincial, and federal, to step in and support the development of the area. “Jyamire Lake has great potential. During the monsoon season, the lake looks especially beautiful and draws more tourists for boating and sightseeing. It must be better organized and maintained,” KC urged.
She further noted that enhancing the lake’s infrastructure would not only boost tourism but would also contribute to sustainable development, employment generation, and increased income for locals.
A Promising Future for Jyamire Lake
As Jyamire Lake continues to develop as a domestic tourism destination, the combined efforts of local communities, tourism operators, and government agencies will be vital. With focused infrastructure upgrades and active promotion, this natural gem has the potential to transform into a major tourism hub in the Lumbini Province. While the region already enjoys natural blessings, planned investments and policy support can elevate Jyamire Lake to national tourism prominence, benefitting both visitors and locals alike.
