Muharram Festivities Illuminate Bhairahawa with Cultural Splendor

Bhairahawa resonates with vibrant cultural celebrations as communities come together to observe Muharram with great enthusiasm. Symbolic replicas of Hasan and Husain, known as Taziyas, are meticulously crafted to mark this occasion.

In Rupandehi, not only Muslim devotees but also followers of Hinduism participate in the traditional worship and ritualistic construction of Taziyas. The village of Bhairahawa’s Thakur community expresses profound faith in this festival, where Taziyas are crafted upon the fulfillment of desired wishes or aspirations.

Various regions including Khajahana, Bhayatol, Kathautiya, and Udayapur witness joint efforts of both Hindu and Muslim communities in constructing Taziyas. Beyond Bhairahawa, regions such as Dhakdhai and Marchwar also celebrate Muharram with fervent Taziya processions. The occasion commemorates Hazrat Imam Husain, a descendant of Prophet Muhammad, who sacrificed himself for Islam and humanity. Taziyas serve as symbolic tributes to these martyrs.

Accompanied by processions, Taziyas are paraded through the streets and later ceremonially immersed, symbolizing the culmination of Muharram’s tenth day, known as Ashura, and the valorous sacrifice of Husain. Despite spanning ten days, the main celebrations predominantly focus on four days, including rituals like cutting the Kerako leaf, erecting the Taziyas on the first day, establishing ‘Chowki,’ and concluding with collective immersion and verses at the local Karbala.

Crafted intricately with bamboo frames adorned in colorful paper, Taziyas are embellished with banners, drums, and ceremonial brass bands, accompanied by enthusiastic dancers, symbolizing the fulfillment of devotees’ wishes. This year, the ceremonial immersion of Taziyas marks the culmination at Karbala.
