Ambica Shrestha, a celebrated figure in Nepal’s tourism industry and the driving force behind the iconic Dwarika’s Hotel, passed away today at the age of 92. Her death signifies the end of an era in Nepal’s hospitality and tourism sector, leaving an indelible legacy behind.
Dwarika’s Hotel, a symbol of Nepalese tourism, stands as a testament to traditional Nepalese art, culture, and heritage. Under Shrestha’s visionary leadership, the hotel rose to prominence as a celebrated boutique establishment in the global tourism market. Her unmatched contributions were pivotal in elevating Dwarika to its esteemed status.
Senior tourism entrepreneur Basanta Mishra emphasized the significant impact of Shrestha’s passing on Nepal’s tourism industry. “She was a true volunteer for Nepal, extending her efforts beyond tourism to various social works. Her expertise in promoting and marketing tourism is unparalleled. Her passing leaves a void in the industry,” he remarked. “The younger generation has learned immensely from her, and her contributions will always be remembered.”
Shrestha’s dedication to promoting Nepalese art and culture through luxury heritage hotels and resorts has been widely acclaimed both locally and internationally. Her initiatives in heritage conservation and the promotion of women’s entrepreneurship have set new industry standards. The Heritage Hotels and Resorts, promoted by her family, have significantly enhanced Nepal’s global image.

With extensive experience leading various tourism organizations, Shrestha played a crucial role in putting Nepal on the world map. “Though she is no longer with us physically, her contributions to the tourism sector will always be remembered,” Shah added.
Shrestha’s inspirational leadership extended beyond tourism. She made significant contributions to heritage conservation through the Nepal Heritage Society and played a vital role in promoting women’s entrepreneurship and empowerment. Her passing is considered an irreplaceable loss to the tourism sector and a void for business mentorship in Nepal.
Tourism entrepreneur Yogendra Shakya shared his experiences of Shrestha’s energetic participation in tourism events. “Ambica Shrestha was an iconic leader in tourism. Her passing is a great loss to the sector. Her personality and work have earned her a reputation in women’s empowerment and the tourism industry,” Shakya stated. “She was a goddess of tourism who brought quality tourists to Nepal through her hospitality services.”
Deepak Raj Joshi, former CEO of the Nepal Tourism Board, expressed his sorrow over Shrestha’s passing. “Her contributions to quality tourism, eco-friendly tourism, and cultural heritage conservation are incomparable. She was an energetic and inspiring figure for the younger generation, remaining active even in the later years of her life,” Joshi noted.
Active in the hotel and tourism industry for 65 years, Shrestha took full responsibility for Dwarika’s Hotel in 1991. Born in Sikkim, India, on February 12, 1933, she completed her commerce studies at Patna University before moving to Kathmandu after marrying Dwarika Das Shrestha. Following her husband’s death, she became the chairman of Dwarika’s Hotel.
Her eldest daughter, Sangita Shrestha, currently leads the hotel, continuing the legacy of her mother’s entrepreneurial success. Ambica Shrestha has received numerous national honors and was actively involved with various social organizations.
The Hotel Association of Nepal expressed deep sorrow over Shrestha’s untimely demise, extending condolences to her bereaved family and paying tribute to her contributions to the tourism sector.
