Historic Ripum Monastery Suffers Major Fire, Dozens of Rooms and Belongings Lost

A fire broke out today afternoon at the historic Ripum Monastery in Gorkha, destroying a three-storey residential building within the monastery premises. The blaze completely gutted the structure, leaving behind extensive damage to the monks’ living quarters and personal belongings.

Extent of Damage

Local resident Chewang Gyalzen Lama reported that the fire consumed nearly 50 rooms, including furniture, clothing, kitchenware, and other essential items. The building, which housed approximately 60 resident monks, was entirely lost in the blaze.

Police Deputy Superintendent Rajkumar Shrestha stated that the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and authorities are investigating all possible factors, including electrical faults or accidental causes.

Monastery and Building Background

The Ripum Monastery is believed to be over a thousand years old, serving as a prominent spiritual center in the region. The affected residential building, however, was relatively modern, constructed 40 years ago to accommodate resident monks. The monastery holds significant religious and cultural importance in Gorkha, making the fire a substantial loss not only to the local religious community but also to the heritage of the area.

Response by Authorities

Police teams from the Samagaun Police Post and Larke Police Post, Namrung, were immediately dispatched to the site to control the fire and secure the premises. While the fire was contained, authorities mentioned that a complete assessment of the damage is still underway.

Fire officials confirmed that no casualties have been reported, and the monks were safely evacuated during the incident. Efforts are now focused on documenting the loss and planning rehabilitation for the displaced monks.

Community Reaction and Support

The local community has expressed shock and concern over the incident. Residents and monastery devotees have begun organizing support for the affected monks, including temporary shelter, clothing, and daily necessities.

Religious leaders highlighted the cultural and spiritual significance of Ripum Monastery, noting that even a partial loss impacts the religious practices and daily life of the monastic community. Authorities have confirmed that a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the fire. Once the assessment is complete, plans will be made for reconstruction and restoration of the damaged residential building.

Given the historical and spiritual importance of Ripum Monastery, conservationists and local leaders are likely to coordinate closely to ensure that reconstruction respects traditional architectural styles while incorporating safety measures against future fires.
