Ltd. has announced the organization of the Second Everest Tourism Awards 2026 along with the World Peace Summit, scheduled to take place on Jestha 15 to mark International Everest Day. The dual events aim to recognize individuals and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to sustainable tourism, arts, culture, and mountain conservation, while also amplifying Nepal’s voice on global climate and peace initiatives.
The announcement was made during a press conference held in Kathmandu on Tuesday, where organizers outlined the vision, objectives, and global significance of the upcoming programs.
Linking Tourism, Culture, and Mountain Protection
Chairperson of the organizing institution, Satyakala Tamang Lama, emphasized that the award program is not merely a ceremonial event but a long-term campaign to integrate tourism, arts, culture, and mountain protection under a unified platform.
She stated that sustainable tourism is essential for safeguarding Nepal’s Himalayan ecosystem. According to her, Nepal’s identity as a global tourism destination is deeply tied to the existence and protection of its mountains. She further stressed that without the Himalayas, Nepal would lose a major part of its tourism identity, making conservation and responsible tourism development inseparable.
Encouraged by the success of the first edition of the Everest Tourism Awards held last year, the organizers have decided to continue the initiative this year with an expanded scope and broader participation.
Honoring Contributors Across Multiple Sectors
Chief Advisor Namgel Sherpa informed that the award ceremony will honor mountaineers, icefall doctors, porters, journalists, social workers, researchers, and other individuals who have contributed significantly to the tourism and mountain sectors. He added that a formal jury committee has been formed to ensure transparent and fair selection of award recipients.
According to Sherpa, both national and international personalities are expected to attend the program, turning the event into a global platform for dialogue, recognition, and collaboration in mountain tourism and conservation.
World Peace Summit to Address Climate Crisis
Managing Director Phurba Gyalbo Moktan elaborated on the objectives of the World Peace Summit, which will be organized alongside the awards ceremony. He stated that the summit will focus on raising global awareness about the impacts of climate change, particularly on mountain regions and vulnerable communities.
He emphasized that the summit aims to highlight shared global challenges posed by the climate crisis. Through international dialogue, Nepal plans to present the realities of climate change impacts experienced in the Himalayas, including melting glaciers, changing weather patterns, and increased environmental risks. Advisor Mahesh Kirati explained that both programs are being organized in remembrance of the historic first ascent of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. He described the day as not only a milestone in mountaineering history but also a symbol of Nepalese pride, courage, and the beginning of human endurance achievements on the world’s highest peak. International Everest Day has since been observed annually to honor this historic achievement and to promote awareness about mountain conservation and responsible tourism.
