Chief Minister of Koshi Province, Hikmat Kumar Karki, has emphasized that the provincial government will actively work toward the comprehensive development of tourism areas along the Koshi River. The statement came after he inspected the ‘Borabad’ area located along the Saptakoshi River in Barahakshetra Municipality-6, Sunsari, which has recently been gaining popularity as a tourist destination.
During his visit, Chief Minister Karki expressed the province’s commitment to supporting necessary infrastructure development in the region to promote sustainable tourism. He stressed that establishing basic facilities is crucial for turning emerging destinations into fully functional tourist spots.

Tourism Potential and Local Development
“We have immense potential in tourism, yet, unfortunately, preliminary development in many areas has not even begun,” said CM Karki. He added that it is encouraging to see municipalities and local bodies successfully collaborate to develop locations as tourist destinations.
The Chief Minister highlighted that coordinated efforts between local governments, the provincial administration, and the private sector are essential to achieve lasting development. He noted that only through joint initiatives can these emerging tourist sites realize their full potential.
Policy for Tourism Infrastructure
CM Karki further informed that the provincial government has formulated policies to develop tourism infrastructure in partnership with local authorities and private stakeholders. This collaborative approach aims to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth, while preserving the natural and cultural resources of the region.
The Borabad area along the Saptakoshi River was specifically cited as a promising site where improved access, amenities, and facilities can attract more visitors and generate economic benefits for local communities. Karki stressed that infrastructure development should be complemented with strategic planning to enhance the visitor experience while maintaining ecological balance.
Collaborative Approach for Sustainable Growth
The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of a tripartite approach, involving the provincial government, local bodies, and private investors, to guarantee sustainable development of tourism zones. Such collaboration, he noted, would create long-term employment opportunities, boost local businesses, and enhance the overall economic growth of Koshi Province.
Karki’s visit to the Borabad area also included discussions with local officials and stakeholders about future projects aimed at improving amenities such as access roads, signage, sanitation, and recreational facilities. These steps are expected to lay the foundation for transforming the area into a model tourist destination in eastern Nepal.

Vision for Koshi Province Tourism
With growing interest in riverside tourism, Chief Minister Karki reaffirmed the provincial government’s vision to harness natural resources for tourism-led economic growth. He expressed optimism that strategic investment and coordinated efforts would elevate the Koshi River’s Borabad area into a major attraction, drawing both domestic and international visitors.
The provincial government’s initiative reflects a broader commitment to leveraging tourism as a driver for sustainable development, cultural preservation, and regional economic prosperity. By focusing on infrastructure, partnerships, and strategic planning, Koshi Province aims to position itself as a notable destination on Nepal’s tourism map.
