In a renewed push to strengthen regional cooperation, Sri Lanka has expressed strong interest in expanding its economic, cultural, and tourism partnership with Nepal, highlighting vast untapped potential between the two nations.
The commitment was shared by Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Nepal, Ruwanthi Delpitiya, during a meeting with representatives of the Nepal-Sri Lanka Friendship Association at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kathmandu.
Focus on Trade, Investment, and Business Collaboration
During the discussion, Ambassador Delpitiya emphasized the importance of enhancing two-way trade and encouraging Nepali entrepreneurs to explore investment opportunities in Sri Lanka. She invited Nepal’s private sector to actively participate in upcoming international business platforms, noting that such engagement could create new industrial partnerships and unlock shared economic growth.
“Sri Lanka views Nepal not merely as a neighbour but as a strategic partner for mutual prosperity,” she said, stressing the importance of identifying sectors for joint ventures and innovation-driven industries.
Private Sector Seen as Key Driver of Bilateral Relations
Echoing the ambassador’s message, Association President Joy Dewan underlined the need for a more dynamic and action-oriented partnership. He outlined three major priorities for future cooperation:
- Strengthening tourism promotion between the two countries
- Expanding collaboration in the hospitality industry
- Exploring new avenues for trade and investment
“It is high time to encourage stronger private sector engagement and people-to-people connectivity,” Dewan noted, adding that business communities must lead the next phase of bilateral relations.
Tourism entrepreneur Sunil Shakya, an executive member of the association, also highlighted the long-term economic benefits of deeper cooperation. He stated that stronger collaboration would significantly boost trade, industrial partnerships, and sustainable development in both countries.
Shared Cultural and Spiritual Heritage Offers Unique Opportunity
A major highlight of the meeting was the discussion on leveraging the two nations’ deep-rooted religious and cultural ties to promote joint tourism initiatives. Both countries share strong Buddhist and Hindu traditions, creating opportunities to develop a transnational spiritual tourism circuit. Nepal is home to Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, while Sri Lanka preserves several sacred Buddhist heritage sites recognized globally, many under the protection of UNESCO.
The proposed collaboration would allow pilgrims and cultural travelers to experience both destinations as a single journey, linking Nepal’s Himalayan spirituality with Sri Lanka’s historic monasteries, coastal landscapes, and wellness traditions.
Expanding Two-Way Tourism Experiences
Leaders at the meeting stressed that bilateral tourism promotion could position Nepal as a premier destination for Sri Lankan visitors seeking pilgrimage, heritage exploration, and adventure tourism. At the same time, Sri Lanka could be marketed to Nepali travelers as an attractive destination offering beaches, wildlife safaris, hill-country retreats, and renowned wellness experiences.
Such reciprocal tourism flows, they noted, would not only enhance cultural understanding but also generate employment and investment opportunities in both countries’ tourism sectors.
A Promising New Chapter in Bilateral Relations
The meeting concluded on an optimistic note, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation in trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. The Nepal-Sri Lanka Friendship Association pledged continued support to facilitate partnerships and business connections.
As both nations seek to diversify their economic alliances in the post-pandemic era, this renewed engagement signals a promising new phase in Sri Lanka–Nepal relations, built on shared heritage, growing economic ambition, and a vision of collective prosperity.
