The Embassy of Nepal in Colombo, in collaboration with the Nepal–Sri Lanka Friendship Association, successfully observed the first-ever International Wellness Day on 15 April 2026 at the historic Gangaramaya Temple. The event was held under the theme “Holistic Wellness,” bringing together diplomats, religious leaders, health professionals, business representatives, and members of civil society. The programme marked a significant milestone in promoting global awareness of wellness as an integrated approach to health and well-being.
Spiritual Opening and Diplomatic Remarks
The ceremony began with blessings and a guided meditation session led by Ven. Udairiyagama Dhammajeewa Thero, setting a reflective tone for the event. In his special address, H.E. Dr. Purna Bahadur Nepali, Ambassador of Nepal to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, highlighted Nepal’s leadership in initiating the United Nations resolution that established 15 April as International Wellness Day. He reiterated Nepal’s commitment to promoting wellness as a holistic concept encompassing physical, mental, social, and environmental well-being.

Panel Discussion on Traditional and Modern Wellness Practices
A key highlight of the programme was a panel discussion titled “Holistic Wellness: Bridging Traditional Knowledge and Modern Lifestyles.” The session was moderated by Ms. Jorgina Wijewardana and featured experts, including Professor Kaumadi Karunagoda, physiotherapist Ms. Hubika Joshi, Dr. W.M. Deepika Priyadarshani, and Ven. Udairiyagama Dhammajeewa Thero.

The discussion focused on integrating traditional healing systems such as Ayurveda, yoga, and mindfulness with modern healthcare practices. Participants also engaged actively in dialogue, emphasizing the importance of lifestyle balance in today’s fast-paced world.
Emphasis on Spirituality, Tourism, and Well-being
Speaking during the programme, Ven. Wetara Mahinda Thero, President of the Sri Lanka–Nepal Buddhist Association, reflected on the shared spiritual heritage between Nepal and Sri Lanka. Similarly, Prof. Rohan De Silva, Vice President of the Sri Lanka–Nepal Business Council, highlighted the growing economic potential of wellness tourism as a bridge between health, culture, and sustainable development.

A special talk on mindfulness and physical well-being was delivered by physiotherapist Ms. Hubika Joshi, focusing on practical approaches to maintaining mental and physical balance in daily life.
Inspiring Voices from Health and Adventure Sectors
The event also featured remarks by Mr. Dimantha Thenuwara, a renowned mountaineer, adventurer, business consultant, and author. He shared insights on mental resilience, discipline, and physical endurance, drawing from his experiences in extreme environments. An art exhibition was also showcased during the programme, with participating artists being honored for their creative contributions.

Strong International Participation
The celebration witnessed the participation of around 200 guests, including ambassadors, deputy heads of missions, representatives of international organizations, government officials, business leaders, civil society members, media personnel, and members of the Nepali community in Sri Lanka. The diverse representation highlighted the global relevance of wellness as a unifying theme across cultures and professions.

The Embassy of Nepal expressed deep gratitude to the management and staff of the Gangaramaya Temple for hosting the event and ensuring its successful execution. Nepal’s Role in Global Wellness Leadership
It is noteworthy that the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on 10 March 2026, officially declaring 15 April as International Wellness Day. Nepal played a leading role as the penholder of the resolution, which was co-sponsored by 40 countries and endorsed by 143 Member States. The successful celebration in Colombo underscores Nepal’s growing diplomatic leadership in promoting wellness as a global agenda and strengthening cultural and people-to-people ties between nations.
