Etihad Airways has announced a major expansion of its mainland China network, unveiling five new routes and adding 28 weekly flights in one of its most significant market expansions in recent years. The move reflects the airline’s growing focus on strengthening connectivity between the United Arab Emirates and key destinations across China, catering to both passenger demand and cargo operations.
New Routes from Abu Dhabi to Key Chinese Cities
Under the expansion plan, Etihad will operate new services from Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi to five major Chinese cities: Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen. With these additions, the airline’s total operations in mainland China will rise to 35 weekly flights across six destinations, including its existing daily service to Beijing Daxing.

The expansion significantly enhances travel options for passengers while strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position as a key aviation hub linking the Middle East with East Asia. Each route has been strategically selected to tap into major economic and population centers across China.
Modern Fleet and Enhanced Passenger Experience
All newly introduced services will be operated using Etihad’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, configured with 28 Business Class seats and 262 Economy Class seats. The use of a consistent widebody fleet across the expanded network is expected to provide a uniform and high-quality travel experience for passengers. The Dreamliner’s advanced features, including improved fuel efficiency and passenger comfort, align with Etihad’s commitment to offering premium services while maintaining operational efficiency.

Strengthening Partnerships with China Eastern Airlines
The new routes will be integrated into Etihad’s joint venture with China Eastern Airlines, further enhancing connectivity between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China. The partnership enables coordinated scheduling, improved connections, and seamless travel experiences for passengers across both airlines’ networks.
China Eastern currently operates flights between major Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Kunming, and Xi’an and the UAE, complementing Etihad’s expanded services. The collaboration is expected to boost bilateral travel, tourism, and business exchanges between the two countries.
Boost to Cargo Connectivity and Trade
In addition to passenger services, the expansion is supported by Etihad’s cargo joint venture with SF Airlines, which will strengthen air freight connectivity between China and global markets. The enhanced cargo network is expected to facilitate the efficient movement of goods across key trade corridors, supporting international commerce and supply chains.

Strategic Importance of New Destinations
Each of the five newly added destinations plays a crucial role in China’s economic and cultural landscape. Shanghai Pudong serves as a global financial hub and a major cargo gateway, while Guangzhou is a vital center for manufacturing and trade in southern China. Chengdu represents a rapidly growing innovation and technology hub in western China, and Hangzhou is widely recognized as a leading center for the digital economy and e-commerce.
Shenzhen, one of China’s most dynamic cities, stands out as a global technology powerhouse and a major export hub. By connecting to these diverse destinations, Etihad aims to cater to a wide range of travel and trade demands, from business and tourism to logistics and technology-driven industries.

Expanding Global Reach and Market Presence
The expansion underscores Etihad Airways’ broader strategy to strengthen its global network and tap into high-growth markets. China remains a key focus area for the airline, given its strong economic ties with the UAE and its importance in global travel and trade.
With increased frequencies, new destinations, and strengthened partnerships, Etihad is positioning itself to play a larger role in connecting China with the Middle East and beyond. The move is expected to enhance passenger convenience, boost tourism flows, and support growing economic cooperation between the two regions.
