Nepal Airlines Prepares for Direct Kathmandu–Dhaka Flights

Nepal’s national flag carrier, Nepal Airlines Corporation, has initiated preparations to launch direct flights between Kathmandu and Dhaka in the near future, marking a significant step toward expanding its international network.

Feasibility Study Underway

According to the airline corporation, preliminary work has already begun, including the formation of a subcommittee to conduct a detailed feasibility study. The study will assess operational, commercial, and logistical aspects before finalizing the route.

Senior Captain and Director of the Operations Department, Subas Rijal, stated that the initiative aims to address the long-standing absence of direct flights by Nepal’s national carrier to Bangladesh’s capital. Despite being neighboring countries, Nepal Airlines has not yet operated flights to Dhaka.

Growing Demand and Regional Connectivity

Currently, airlines from Bangladesh operate regular flights to Kathmandu, ensuring air connectivity between the two nations. In addition, Nepal’s private carrier, Himalaya Airlines, has already been serving the Dhaka route. Officials believe that launching direct flights by the national carrier will enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and strengthen economic and cultural ties between Nepal and Bangladesh.

Decision After Committee Report

The airline has clarified that the final decision on operating Kathmandu–Dhaka flights will be made based on the report submitted by the feasibility study subcommittee. The report is expected to provide recommendations on route viability, scheduling, and market demand.

Expansion of Kathmandu–Delhi Flights

In a parallel development, Nepal Airlines has expanded its flight frequency on the Kathmandu–Delhi–Kathmandu route. Since Chaitra 17, the airline has added three additional weekly flights. With this expansion, the total number of weekly flights between Kathmandu and New Delhi has reached 10, reflecting increasing passenger demand and the airline’s effort to strengthen its regional presence.

Focus on Strengthening Cargo Operations

To further improve its services, Nepal Airlines has also formed a Cargo Management System Study Taskforce. The initiative aims to enhance efficiency and productivity in cargo operations, which is considered a key area for revenue growth.

Strategic Move for Growth

The planned Kathmandu–Dhaka route, along with expanded regional connectivity and improved cargo systems, reflects Nepal Airlines’ broader strategy to modernize its operations and compete more effectively in the international aviation market. If implemented successfully, the new route is expected to open up fresh opportunities for trade, tourism, and bilateral cooperation, reinforcing Nepal’s position in South Asian aviation connectivity.
