The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has unveiled plans to introduce homestay programs in the Handigaun and Basantapur areas. These initiatives are part of the policies and programs for the fiscal year 2081/82, as presented by Mayor Balen Shah during the municipal assembly meeting today.
In a bid to enhance cultural heritage, the city will seek consultations to list Handigaun as a World Heritage Site. Additionally, efforts will be made to transfer the management and operation of Boudhanath and Swayambhunath, both already World Heritage Sites, under the city’s jurisdiction.
Mayor Shah emphasized the city’s commitment to preserving and promoting local festivals such as Indra Jatra, Seto Machhindranath Jatra, and Pachali Bhairav Jatra. The city will also work on listing more local arts and cultural practices with UNESCO, aiming to protect and celebrate Kathmandu’s rich cultural heritage.
New Health and Safety Measures:
In a significant move towards public health, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City will implement a complete ban on smoking, alcohol consumption, and the use of narcotics within its boundaries in the upcoming fiscal year. Mayor Shah highlighted that measures will also be taken to ensure the quality and hygiene of food products.
Moreover, the registration process for health institutions operating within the city will be digitized, improving efficiency and transparency.
Local governments in Nepal are required to present their annual budgets by the 10th of Asar each year. This proactive planning and the introduction of new policies aim to foster cultural preservation and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
