The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Nepal have initiated discussions to establish a dedicated “Russian Corner” at the International Mountain Museum (IMM) in Pokhara, to promote cultural exchange and highlight the shared heritage of mountaineering and mountain exploration between Nepal and Russia.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting held at the NMA Secretariat in Nagpokhari, Naxal, where NMA President Fur Gelje Sherpa met with Anastasia Khokhlova, Counsellor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Nepal and Director of the Russian House in Kamalpokhari.
Proposed Russian Corner to Showcase Mountaineering Heritage
During the meeting, representatives from Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Nepal exchanged views on establishing a permanent Russian exhibition space at the International Mountain Museum in Gharipatan, Pokhara. The proposed “Russian Corner” would showcase Russia’s rich history and contribution to mountaineering, Himalayan expeditions, scientific exploration and mountain-related cultural heritage.
The dedicated space is expected to provide visitors with an opportunity to learn more about Russian climbers, expeditions and the country’s long-standing connection with mountain exploration. The NMA and the Russian Embassy expressed their commitment to working together to further develop the concept, determine the scope of the exhibition and coordinate the necessary arrangements for its implementation.
Initiative to Promote International Mountain Heritage
The proposed exhibition is expected to contribute to the broader effort to preserve and promote the heritage of mountaineering through international cooperation. The International Mountain Museum is an important institution for documenting and presenting the history, culture, biodiversity and achievements associated with mountain regions around the world. The museum attracts mountaineers, researchers, students, tourists and other visitors interested in the world’s mountain environments and climbing history. By incorporating Russia’s mountaineering and exploration heritage into the museum, the proposed Russian Corner could provide an additional international dimension to the museum’s existing collections and exhibitions.
Focus on Cultural and Educational Exchange
Beyond displaying historical materials, the initiative could serve as a platform for knowledge sharing, educational activities and institutional cooperation between Nepal and Russia. The collaboration is expected to create opportunities for both countries to exchange knowledge and experiences related to mountaineering, mountain research, cultural heritage and tourism. The initiative also reflects the role of mountaineering as a means of connecting people and institutions across borders, particularly between countries with strong links to mountain exploration.
Strengthening Nepal-Russia Relations
The proposed Russian Corner is also expected to contribute to strengthening bilateral relations between Nepal and the Russian Federation in areas including culture, tourism, mountaineering and heritage preservation. Both sides agreed to continue consultations and maintain close coordination to finalize the concept, framework and implementation plan for the project in the coming months.
If realized, the initiative would add another international cultural feature to Pokhara’s tourism landscape while providing a permanent platform to highlight Russia’s contribution to global mountaineering and the shared spirit of mountain exploration between Nepal and Russia.
