Tourism Professionals Trained in Generative AI to Drive Digital Transformation in Nepal’s Tourism Sector

A two-day capacity-building program focused on the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nepal’s tourism industry has concluded in Kathmandu, aiming to equip tourism professionals and businesses with practical digital skills for a rapidly changing technology-driven environment.

The training was organized by the Society of Tour and Travel Operators of Nepal (SOTTO-Nepal) in collaboration with the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-supported Sustainable Tourism Project (STP). The program was held on August 16 and 17, 2026, at Hotel G Ramayan in Kaladhara, Kathmandu.

33 Tavel Representatives Participate

A total of 33 representatives from Nepal’s travel sector participated in the two-day program. The participants included eight women and 25 men, representing different professional backgrounds within the travel industry.

The training was designed to move beyond theoretical discussions and provide participants with hands-on knowledge of how Generative AI can be integrated into day-to-day travel operations, business communication and promotional activities.

Focus on Practical Applications of Generative AI

Throughout the training, participants explored a range of AI applications that can support tourism businesses in improving efficiency, communication and customer engagement.

Key areas covered during the program included digital marketing and travel promotion, AI-assisted content creation, professional communication and writing, productivity enhancement, customer service improvement, and practical applications of AI in travel businesses.

The sessions also highlighted how emerging AI tools can assist tourism professionals in developing content, streamlining routine tasks, and improving the way businesses communicate with potential and existing customers.

SOTTO-Nepal Highlights the Importance of AI Skills

Speaking at the program, SOTTO-Nepal President Man Bahadur Shahi emphasized the practical value of AI knowledge for tourism entrepreneurs and professionals.

He expressed confidence that developing AI-related skills would help travel businesses prepare more effective and practical travel plans while responding to changing market demands.

Shahi also announced that similar capacity-building programs are planned for Lumbini and Janakpur, extending digital skills development opportunities to travel professionals beyond Kathmandu.

Tourism Board Calls for Technology Adoption

Khadga Bikram Shah, Senior Manager at the Nepal Tourism Board and National Project Coordinator of the Sustainable Tourism Project, described AI as an increasingly important technology for the tourism industry.

He highlighted the potential of AI to contribute to better service quality and encouraged travel entrepreneurs and professionals to become familiar with emerging technologies.

According to Shah, adopting new technologies can help travel businesses introduce innovation into their services and remain competitive as travelers increasingly rely on digital platforms and technology throughout their travel journeys.
