A new suspension bridge has been constructed over the Narayani River in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat-Susta-West), connecting Susta. The bridge, located in Paklihawa, Susta Rural Municipality-5, has already started to attract a significant number of visitors, enhancing internal tourism activities in the region.
Engineer Pravet Regmi from the Suspension Bridge Division Office reported that although the physical construction of the bridge is complete, it has yet to be officially inaugurated. Despite this, the bridge has become a popular spot for sightseers. According to Regmi, the bridge cost NPR 236.598 million to build and spans 1,571 meters in length and 1.6 meters in width. Prabhu Yadav, the Ward Chairperson of Susta-5, expressed that the local community is very excited about the new bridge.
“We are all very excited about the bridge. Currently, locals, as well as people from neighboring districts and border areas of India, come to see it. It has become as crowded as a fair,” Yadav said. “We expect that the bridge will not only improve transportation but also boost tourism activities, leading to economic benefits.”
The bridge has garnered much attention and attraction as it is promoted as one of the longest suspension bridges in the country. Previously, the Kathal-Malhaniya-Multispan Suspension Bridge connecting Siraha Municipality-13 Malhaniya and Janakandini Rural Municipality-6 Kathal in Madhes Province was considered the longest suspension bridge in Nepal, with a length of 1,500.44 meters.
Sandeep Dhawal, a resident of Palhinandan-4, expressed enthusiasm, stating that the new suspension bridge will turn Susta into a tourist destination. “Susta was always associated with difficulties. Now, with the bridge, it is easier to cross the Narayani River. If the current interest from internal tourists continues, it will contribute to the economic development of the local people,” he said.
Every day, hundreds of people visit the bridge. Dhawal mentioned that the sight of young people taking photos on the bridge is particularly appealing. The new suspension bridge is not only a marvel of engineering but also a beacon of hope for the local community, promising improved connectivity and economic growth through increased tourism.
