Dolakha Sets Sights On Becoming Bagmati Province’s Tourism Capital

Dolakha’s tourism entrepreneurs have set an ambitious target of establishing the district as the tourism capital of Bagmati Province, seeking stronger infrastructure, coordinated government support and wider promotion to transform its diverse natural, religious, cultural and adventure attractions into a more competitive tourism destination.

The vision was announced during the fifth annual general meeting of the Dolakha District Hotel Association, held at Durbar Party Palace in Satdobato, Charikot. The gathering brought together representatives from the hotel and tourism sector to discuss the district’s tourism prospects, challenges facing local businesses and measures needed to strengthen Dolakha’s position within Bagmati Province’s tourism economy.

Dolakha’s Diverse Attractions Form The Basis For Tourism Ambition

Tourism stakeholders at the meeting highlighted Dolakha’s unusual combination of mountain landscapes, religious sites, historical heritage, indigenous culture and adventure destinations as a strong foundation for expanding the district’s tourism industry. Binod Jirel, representing the association, proposed the vision of making Dolakha the tourism capital of Bagmati Province during his welcome address. The proposal reflects a long-term ambition to position the district not only as a destination for individual attractions, but as a broader tourism hub capable of generating greater economic activity for local communities and businesses.

Destinations including Kalinchowk, Shailung, Jiri, Rolwaling, Gaurishankar, Bhimeshwor, Tamakoshi, Bigu and Lapchi give Dolakha a wide range of tourism products. Stakeholders said the district’s geographical and cultural diversity could be leveraged to attract different categories of visitors, provided the destinations are developed and promoted through a coordinated strategy.

Integrated Tourism Circuit Seen As Key To Longer Visitor Stays

Participants emphasized the need to develop an integrated tourism package linking Dolakha’s major attractions rather than promoting each destination separately. Such an approach could encourage visitors to explore multiple locations during a single trip and increase the amount of time and money they spend within the district. The meeting called for improvements in road connectivity, transportation services and tourism infrastructure, along with efforts to raise hotel and hospitality standards. Stakeholders also stressed the importance of skill-based training for people working in the tourism sector so that visitors can receive better services throughout their stay.

Digital promotion was another major area of focus. Tourism entrepreneurs said greater use of digital media could help Dolakha reach potential domestic and international visitors more effectively, while stronger destination marketing could increase awareness of attractions that remain relatively less explored.

Private Sector Seeks Stronger Government Coordination

Association President Kumar Shrestha highlighted the importance of private-sector participation in turning Dolakha’s tourism potential into sustainable economic opportunities. According to him, local businesses alone cannot achieve the district’s tourism ambitions without coordinated planning and investment from all levels of government. He stressed the need for greater cooperation among the local, provincial and federal governments, particularly in areas such as infrastructure development, connectivity, tourism promotion and policies that support private investment.

The association also reviewed its annual financial and progress reports during the meeting and discussed plans for the coming year. Addressing the challenges faced by tourism entrepreneurs and creating better opportunities to promote local products were among the priorities identified by the association.

Tourism Development Positioned As Driver Of Dolakha’s Economy

The meeting also recognized local tourism entrepreneur Shankar Basnet, director of Durbar Party Palace and S S Kings, by honoring him as the best businessman of the year for his contribution to the local business sector. The gathering concluded with renewed commitment from local entrepreneurs, government representatives and tourism stakeholders to systematically develop and commercialize Dolakha’s tourism sector. Participants emphasized that sustained investment, stronger destination management and coordinated promotion will be essential to turning the district’s tourism potential into tangible economic benefits.

With its combination of high-altitude landscapes, pilgrimage sites, cultural heritage and adventure destinations, Dolakha has the ingredients to emerge as a major tourism center in Bagmati Province. The proposed tourism capital vision now depends on how effectively stakeholders can translate that ambition into improved infrastructure, connected tourism products and a stronger visitor experience.
