Kakre Bihar, located just a 10-minute drive from Birendranagar, stands as the highest and most serene spot in the valley. Recently, it has become a popular destination for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of Surkhet and enjoy the tranquil environment.
The historical significance of Kakre Bihar gained prominence after King Birendra’s visit to Surkhet in 2029 B.S. (1972 A.D.), during which the site, which was in ruins, started attracting more attention. The monastery was only reconstructed in 2075 B.S. (2018 A.D.).
Despite its importance, Kakre Bihar still requires extensive study, research, and exploration to fully understand its historical and archaeological aspects. It is believed that the monastery was built in the 13th century. Some evidence suggests that King Ashok Malla of the Sinja Empire might have constructed Kakre Bihar in 1325 B.S. (1268 A.D.).
Perched on a high point in the valley, this Shikhar-style monastery has now become a favorite destination for tourists visiting Surkhet.
Although Kakre Bihar is one of the most outstanding tourist sites in the Karnali Province, known for its historical, religious, and archaeological significance, it has yet to receive the proper promotion it deserves.
