Trekking trails around Manaslu in Nepal have been heavily damaged by a recent flood in Budhi Gandaki, and authorities have directed trekkers to postpone their journey to Chum Valley while remaining cautious on other trails. Several trekking trails and suspension bridges were reported damaged after days of heavy rainfall in mid-September.
Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP), a division of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), said all the trekkers have been reported safe, and various rescue operations for stranded people in flood-hit villages are ongoing with the help of relevant authorities. The trail damage has caused concern over trekkers’ safety as well as accessibility to key trekking routes in the region during Nepal’s peak Autumn trekking season.

Chum Valley Trek Suspended After Suspension Bridges Washed Away
The trail beyond Lokpa towards Chum Valley has been washed away completely, cutting off access to the popular valley. The cantilevered bridge in Sardibhir was reportedly heavily damaged during the flood. MCAP has advised all trekking agencies, guides and trekkers to postpone their journeys towards Chum Valley. It also warned people not to take risks by wandering into damaged trails, riverbanks and gullies as the rising waters could still cause danger despite the receding flood.
Machhakhola–Jagat Route and Salleri Trail Severely Damaged
Several stretches of trails leading between Machhakhola and Jagat have been damaged in the Salleri area, and nearby sites including Soti, Khorlabesi, Tatopani, Yaru Bagar and Jagat Bagar were impacted. In addition, trails in the Salleri region have also been devastated, rendering the popular trekking destination inaccessible for now. Damage to these trails is considered a major blow to trekkers heading for Machhakhola, Jagat and Manaslu Circuit as they form a key part of the journey route. These trekkers heading for Manaslu Conservation Area are advised to check the status of the trail ahead and not assume it to be clear before setting out on the journey.

Philim Suggested as a Possible Alternative for Larke Pass
Philim can be an alternate destination on the way to exploring Larke Pass, as the trail from here towards the popular high pass is reportedly clear and in good condition. However, walkers and trekkers should ensure flight availability from Kathmandu to Philim and confirm the travel plans.
They should also get the latest information on trail opening before undertaking any plans to visit Manaslu Circuit through Jagat to avoid the broken trail near Machhakhola and Salleri. Trekkers, agencies and guides were also requested to ensure there is no risk or hazard on the route from the Machhakhola side and work out a safe passage.

Trail Restoration Underway as Authorities Coordinate Rescue Efforts
MCAP is working in coordination with local and provincial authorities as well as relevant government bodies to help relief operations for stranded people caught in the flood. Restoration of damaged trails and clearing of detour routes depend on the extent of the damage, weather conditions, and the time needed to restore bridges, roads, and other infrastructure. The conservation body has requested all trekking agencies, guides, the local community, and trekkers to cooperate to enable smooth trail restoration and rescue operations while ensuring everyone’s safety.
People intending to trek the Manaslu route should avoid damaged trails and postpone their plans for Chum Valley unless the trails have been cleared and deemed safe. Heavy floods in Budhi Gandaki have devastated the trails and created hazards such as blocked rivers and gullies, putting trekkers, hikers and other visitors at risk. It serves as a reminder for trekkers and hikers of the vulnerability of trails and routes in Nepal’s high mountains, which are prone to such extreme weather events. Manaslu, one of the Himalayas ’ most popular trekking destinations in the Annapurna region, witnessed its record-breaking trekking season last year.
