Khumbu Climbing Center Launches Major 16 Day Mountaineering Training Programme in Phortse

The Khumbu Climbing Center (KCC) has opened applications for its annual mountaineering and ice climbing training program, scheduled to take place in Phortse, Solukhumbu, from January 14 to January 29, 2027. Organised in partnership with The Juniper Fund, the program aims to strengthen the technical skills, climbing safety and professional capabilities of Nepali mountain guides and high altitude workers.

Mountaineering

The training will focus on improving participants’ mountaineering knowledge and promoting safer, more responsible climbing practices in Nepal’s mountain regions. Applications will be accepted from December 1 to 3, 2026, at designated collection centres in Phortse, Namche Bazaar, Kathmandu and Lukla. Applicants must submit their forms in person during the specified hours.

KCC Announces Application Schedule and Training Locations

The application forms can be submitted between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM from December 1 to December 3. In Phortse, applicants can visit the KCC Office, while those in Namche Bazaar can submit their forms at High Camp Cafe. In Kathmandu, the designated collection point is the Pasang Lhamu Foundation in Dhumbarahi, and applicants in Lukla can visit Namaste Lodge.

The application process requires candidates to complete and submit physical forms in person. Applicants must ensure that their forms are submitted within the announced dates and collection hours. The program is scheduled to run for 16 days, providing participants with an opportunity to develop their mountaineering and ice climbing capabilities.

Applicants Must Submit Required Documents and Fee

Applicants are required to provide a photocopy of their Nepali citizenship certificate and a recommendation letter from an authorised trekking agency. They must also submit photocopies of certificates from previous mountaineering training programmes, if applicable. In addition, candidates need to provide two recent passport size photographs along with an application fee of NPR 200.

All application forms must be completed in English capital letters. The organizers have stated that incomplete applications will be disqualified, making it important for candidates to check their documents before submission. Applicants are also required to appear in person rather than sending their forms through representatives.

Training Prioritizes Women and Active Mountaineering Professionals

The selection process will give priority to female applicants and individuals actively working in mountaineering. This approach is intended to encourage wider participation in technical mountain training and support the professional development of people directly involved in Nepal’s climbing and expedition sector. However, the supplied announcement does not specify the total number of available training places or further selection criteria.

The program is designed for Nepali mountain guides and high altitude workers seeking to strengthen their technical knowledge and climbing practices. Participants who do not own the required technical climbing equipment will have the option to rent gear directly from KCC. This arrangement will help applicants access the equipment needed to participate in the training.

Programme Aims to Strengthen Safety in Nepal’s Mountain Tourism

Technical training for mountain professionals is an important part of improving safety and service standards in Nepal’s mountaineering sector. Guides and high altitude workers play essential roles in supporting climbing expeditions, assisting international mountaineers and managing challenges in demanding mountain environments. Their responsibilities require strong technical knowledge, practical climbing skills and the ability to respond to difficult conditions at high elevations. Strengthening these capabilities can contribute to safer climbing practices and more professional expedition services. It can also help build confidence among international climbers who rely on experienced local teams during mountain journeys.

Through its annual training program, KCC, in partnership with The Juniper Fund, is continuing its focus on developing the skills of Nepal’s mountain workforce. The initiative highlights the importance of investing in local professionals who provide essential support to the country’s adventure tourism industry. By improving access to technical training, programs like this can help mountain workers strengthen their professional abilities and maintain higher safety standards during expeditions. Better trained professionals can contribute to safer climbing experiences, support the sustainable development of mountaineering activities and help maintain Nepal’s reputation as a leading destination for international mountaineering.
