The government has announced plans to conduct a comprehensive study of the flood damage caused by the recent glacial lake outburst in Thame, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Municipality-5, Solukhumbu. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) will deploy a team of experts and technical personnel to assess the affected area.
During a press conference organized by the NDRRMA today, Executive Director Anil Pokhrel revealed that the study will investigate the causes of the flood and determine whether it is feasible for residents to remain in the area or if relocation is necessary.
On July 16, the area experienced significant damage due to flooding caused by a glacial lake outburst, which brought down large boulders and debris. The flood affected 24 houses, as well as local infrastructure including schools and clinics. Following the incident, a preliminary aerial inspection was carried out by a team led by Minister for Defense, Manveer Rai.
Pokhrel noted that the initial findings indicated that rising temperatures due to climate change had led to the melting of glaciers and permafrost, causing the glacial lake to burst. The detailed study will provide further insights into the impact of the flood and inform future mitigation and response strategies.
