Hindus across Nepal are celebrating Shree Krishna Janmashtami today with deep devotion and various religious programs to honor the birth of Lord Krishna. The festival, which marks the birth of one of the most revered deities in Hinduism, is observed with grandeur and veneration.
According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Shree Krishna was born at midnight on Bhadrakrishna Astami, as per the lunar calendar, during the Dwapar era. He is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the preserver and protector of humanity from evil, injustice, and destructive forces. Lord Krishna is also recognized as the proponent of the three key principles of Gyanayog (the path of knowledge), Karmayog (the path of righteous action), and Bhaktiyog (the path of devotion).
The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm to honor the good deeds of Lord Krishna, who, according to legend, was born to Basudev and Devaki while they were imprisoned by the tyrant king Kansa in Mathura. Lord Krishna is renowned for guiding humanity on the path of knowledge, truth, and immortality.
Lord Krishna is affectionately known as “Gopal” for his service as a herder of cows and “Manmohan” for the enchanting melodies he played on his flute, which captivated everyone around him.
Devotees throng temples dedicated to Lord Krishna, including the famous Shree Krishna Temple in Mangal Bazaar, Lalitpur. This renowned temple, crafted from stone, was built by King Siddhi Narsingh Malla of Patan and is celebrated for its artistic beauty and historical significance.
Various religious organizations and institutions across the country mark the occasion with colorful processions featuring idols of Lord Krishna and decorative portraits. Devotees, particularly women, spend the night chanting prayers, singing devotional songs, dancing, and lighting oil lamps in reverence to Lord Krishna.
The atmosphere is filled with devotion as communities come together to celebrate the birth of a deity who continues to inspire millions with his teachings and life story.
