Pokhara, a prominent tourist hub in Nepal, has seen its tourism industry face several contemporary challenges. In light of these issues, the Pokhara Tourism Council submitted a memorandum to the Minister for Industry, Tourism, and Forests of Gandaki Province, Mr. Mitralal Basyal. The memorandum was handed over by the President of the Pokhara Tourism Council, Mr. Taranath Pahari, during a formal meeting.

The document outlined the various pressing problems currently impacting the tourism industry in the region, calling for the provincial government’s immediate attention and intervention. It highlighted key concerns such as the need for infrastructure development, better promotion of Pokhara’s natural and cultural assets, and addressing issues related to accessibility for both domestic and international tourists.

During the handover, President Pahari emphasized that the tourism sector, one of the primary contributors to Gandaki Province’s economy, is facing obstacles that could impede its recovery and growth post-pandemic. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts between the government and private sector to develop sustainable tourism initiatives that could attract more visitors while preserving the natural environment and cultural heritage of the region.

  2. Implementation of promotional campaigns targeting international markets to boost tourist inflow.
  3. Modernization of facilities at popular destinations such as Phewa Lake and Sarangkot to provide better experiences for visitors.
  4. Enhancement of safety measures and amenities at adventure tourism spots, including paragliding and trekking routes, ensuring that Nepal remains a top destination for adventure enthusiasts.
  5. The a need for policies that encourage sustainable tourism practices and protect the environment from the growing impacts of tourism.

Minister Basyal, acknowledging the concerns raised by the Pokhara Tourism Council, assured that the provincial government is already working on several initiatives aimed at strengthening the tourism sector. He mentioned that the government is focusing on infrastructure development, improving services, and establishing a better connection between tourism operators and government bodies to ensure the long-term prosperity of the sector.

The memorandum concluded with a call for urgent action and collaboration between the government, tourism entrepreneurs, and local communities. Both parties expressed optimism that through cooperation, the Gandaki Province can reinforce its status as a premier tourist destination in Nepal and address the challenges that threaten its growth.
