Koshi Province to Boost Air Connectivity to Hilly and Himalayan Districts: CM Karki

Koshi Province Chief Minister, Hikmat Kumar Karki, announced efforts to initiate flights connecting the hilly and Himalayan districts of the province with the provincial capital, Biratnagar. Speaking at a certificate distribution event for professors contributing to the preparation of the second periodic plan in Biratnagar today, CM Karki emphasized the importance of expanding air connectivity.

He highlighted that transforming Biratnagar Airport into an international airport would help enhance direct trade links with cities in Bangladesh and India. Despite having 11 airports in Koshi Province, only a few are currently operational, Karki noted, adding that efforts are underway to begin flights to hilly and Himalayan districts from Biratnagar, exploring potential routes.

“We are in discussions with the private sector, and the provincial government is ready to share costs if necessary,” said Karki. He further revealed plans to declare 2082 BS as the “Koshi Tourism Year” and aims to start flight operations to certain destinations before that.

The provincial government is actively working to attract tourists from India and Bangladesh, particularly religious tourists from India, and sees immense potential in this sector. Karki urged the need for strategic planning to tap into this market.

In addition, CM Karki stressed the significance of the information technology and agriculture sectors, stating, “There is great potential to increase exports in these two areas, and the Koshi government is moving forward with plans to enhance exports.” He emphasized that tourism and exports can generate much-needed foreign currency, addressing the country’s economic needs.
