Nepal’s First Passenger Cable Car Undergoes Major Upgrade with Advanced Technology

Nepal’s pioneering passenger cable car service, operated by Manakamana Darshan Pvt. Ltd., has recently completed a significant upgrade with the installation of cutting-edge D-connect technology. This upgrade, executed by Doppelmayr, an esteemed Austrian cable car manufacturer, enhances the service’s operations from Cheres in Chitwan to the revered Manakamana Mai pilgrimage site in Gorkha.

The modernization project, which took approximately two months to complete, involved the replacement of the main pole and the integration of new digital systems. The overhaul was carried out at an investment of around NPR 50 crores. Following a temporary suspension on June 31, the service is scheduled to resume operations on September 17.

Established in 1998 by the prominent industrialist Laxman Babu Shrestha, the Manakamana Cable Car was Nepal’s first passenger cable car service. Its success has set a precedent for similar ventures across the country. Recognized as one of the top taxpayers in the tourism sector, the company has also received several accolades from the Nepalese government for its contributions.

After 26 years of operating with analog systems, the Manakamana Cable Car has transitioned to a state-of-the-art digital setup. Rajesh Babu Shrestha, Managing Director of Manakamana Darshan Pvt. Ltd., emphasized the company’s commitment to evolving with technological advancements. “The upgrade reflects our dedication to providing a modern and efficient service, and we will continue to adapt to changing technologies,” he said.

With the new digital systems in place, the Manakamana Cable Car aims to enhance safety and operational efficiency, further solidifying its leadership position in Nepal’s cable car industry.
