The Siddhakali Temple, located in Chainpur Municipality-3, has fallen into obscurity due to inadequate promotion and management. Despite its religious and touristic significance, the temple remains under-recognized. Devotees from both within and outside the district visit the temple, believing that their prayers will be answered.
Pujari Om Bahadur Puri stated that if proper efforts were made to promote Siddhakali Temple, it could become a prominent religious tourism destination. Situated near the Chainpur Bazaar, this historic and sacred temple holds immense religious, cultural, and historical value. The temple is especially known for its annual fairs during Balachaturdashi and Ram Navami, which attract a large number of devotees who come to scatter Satbij (sacred seeds) in memory of their ancestors.
There is also a designated area near the temple for releasing pigeons and performing animal sacrifices, which is part of the local rituals. According to Pujari Puri, it is widely believed that offering prayers at Siddhakali Temple can fulfill one’s deepest wishes and desires.
Siddhakali Temple is also one of the significant Shakti Peeths in Nepal, as it is believed to be the place where the right eye of Goddess Sati fell. Pilgrims from various parts of Nepal and India visit this holy site. Despite being a well-known religious location, the temple’s significance has not been properly highlighted, leaving it largely ignored. Local residents feel that the government should take an active role in developing this site as a religious tourism hub.
Historically, Chainpur saw an influx of Newar traders from Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Dhulikhel, Banepa, Sanga, and Nala, who settled in the area, attracted by its potential for trade. The town’s name, Chainpur, evolved from the religious and historical name “Chandrapur,” according to Pujari Ratnanath Mahant. Another notable feature of Chainpur is the famous metal pitchers (Karuwas) crafted by the artisans of the area, which add to the town’s cultural heritage.
