Nepal Government Declares ‘National Yak Day’ on Baishakh 7

The Government of Nepal has announced that Baishakh 7 will be celebrated as National Yak Day every year. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting today, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

Agriculture and Livestock Development Minister Ram Nath Adhikari approved the proposal on Bhadra 30, which aims to conserve yaks and promote their significance at both the national and international levels. The ministry hopes this initiative will help raise awareness about the importance of yaks and chauris (crossbreeds of yaks and local cows) and contribute to their preservation.

Minister Adhikari stated that National Yak Day will enhance the quality of yak-related products, potentially boosting national income. He also emphasized that the development and promotion of yaks and chauris are directly linked to their conservation.

Nepal is known for producing the world-famous yak cheese, rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, as well as yak yogurt, which is a renowned dairy product. Chhurpi (hardened cheese made from yak milk) is a primary source of income for farmers in the Himalayan regions.

Yaks are listed as protected wildlife under the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act, 2029 BS. The Yak Genetic Resource Center, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, had proposed that Baishakh 7 be declared National Yak Day to coincide with its golden jubilee, highlighting the importance of yak conservation and promotion in Nepal.

The ministry believes that this annual celebration will help further the development of yak products and support the livelihoods of communities in mountainous areas dependent on yaks.
