The International Development Institute (IDI) and the Nepal Association of Tour & Travel Agents (NATTA) are jointly representing the Maya Devi Heritage Destination Development and Promotion initiative at the Nepal Hospitality Conclave 2024. This initiative, in collaboration with USAID Trade and USAID Trade and Competitiveness, aims to position the Maya Devi Heritage site as a world-class tourism destination.
As part of the initiative, a comprehensive two-year marketing strategy is being implemented, to increase tourist visits to Lumbini by 50%. The strategy focuses on mobilizing both public and private investments to enhance the site’s infrastructure and overall appeal. Key areas of improvement include introducing innovative tourism products, upgrading landscaping and signage, enhancing cleanliness and safety, and improving accessibility and sustainability at the Maya Devi Heritage site.

The initiative also emphasizes the diversification of tourism offerings in the region. This includes establishing new lodges and facilities, expanding services, promoting wellness tourism, and integrating elements of green tourism and meditation. These developments align with the principles of Buddhism, aiming to create a deep sense of connection for visitors to the birthplace of Buddha.
By promoting sustainable tourism practices, the initiative seeks to elevate the value of tourism in Lumbini. Through product diversification and service expansion, the project aims to create a more holistic visitor experience while preserving the cultural and spiritual significance of the heritage site.
IDI and NATTA invite stakeholders, tourism professionals, and the general public to visit their stall at the Lemon Tree Premier during the Nepal Hospitality Conclave on September 26th and 27th. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the Maya Devi Heritage Destination initiative and share insights on how to further develop Lumbini as a premier global tourist destination.
