Capacity Expansion at Tribhuvan International Airport: Flight Management Adjustments Announced

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has announced that flight numbers at Tribhuvan International Airport will be managed fairly and equitably in line with the airport’s capacity enhancement efforts. This strategic decision aims to optimize operations while ensuring safety and efficiency at the airport.

In a recent statement, the Authority clarified that the airport’s operational hours would be limited to 14 hours due to the current capacity constraints. As a result, all flights scheduled between 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM will be suspended. This measure is essential for maintaining the airport’s functionality while the expansion is underway.

Starting from November 9, 2024, the Authority will implement a new operational schedule, which will restrict flight timings to the specified 14-hour window. This adjustment is part of a broader initiative to enhance the airport’s capabilities over the next six months.

According to CAAN spokesperson Hansraj Pandey, the management of flight numbers adheres to the basic principles of bilateral and multilateral air service agreements between Nepal and other countries. This approach ensures that the allocation of flight slots remains equitable and in line with international standards.

Dipendra Shrestha, the chief of the air traffic capacity enhancement project, outlined plans for significant expansions at the airport. These improvements will include the construction of a parallel taxiway to the west, an international apron to the north, and a hangar apron to the east of the airport. These developments aim to accommodate the growing demand for air travel.

In light of these changes, the Authority has urged all stakeholders involved in aviation activities to comply with legal regulations governing airfares and to refrain from engaging in practices that violate these laws. CAAN warned that any aviation service provider found in contravention of the legal framework would face penalties.

Furthermore, the Authority expressed its gratitude to all aviation personnel and public servants who have worked tirelessly to provide round-the-clock services at the airport during this transitional period.

In addition, CAAN has made a special request to domestic and international airlines to operate flights from Gautam Buddha International Airport and Pokhara International Airport to further facilitate air travel in the region.
