The 16th meeting of the Nepal-China Diplomatic Consultation Mechanism is currently underway in Kathmandu, starting at 10:30 am today. The discussions, led by key diplomatic figures from both nations, are centered around enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation across various sectors, with a strong emphasis on tourism.
Amrit Bahadur Rai, Spokesperson at the Foreign Ministry, highlighted that the meeting encompasses comprehensive discussions on the broad spectrum of Nepal-China relations. Key areas of cooperation under review include education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, trade, investment, tourism, financial support, and connectivity.
Representing Nepal, Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal leads the delegation, which includes senior officials from multiple ministries. The Chinese delegation is headed by Sun Weidong, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, who arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday morning for a three-day official visit.
Tourism, a vital sector for Nepal’s economy, is a focal point of the discussions. Both nations are exploring strategies to boost tourist inflow, promote cultural exchanges, and enhance tourism infrastructure. The collaboration aims to attract more Chinese tourists to Nepal’s renowned destinations, leveraging historical ties and shared cultural heritage.
In addition to the meetings, Vice Minister Weidong has an agenda of high-profile engagements. He paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ on Monday and is scheduled to meet President Ramchandra Paudel. His visit underscores the importance of the diplomatic relationship and the mutual interest in strengthening ties.
The outcomes of this meeting are expected to pave the way for enhanced cooperation, particularly in tourism, facilitating economic growth and cultural exchange between Nepal and China. Weidong is scheduled to conclude his visit and return to China tomorrow.
