The lack of regular flights to Rara Airport has left residents of Mugu in distress. Airlines such as Summit Air, Tara Air, Nepal Airlines, and Sita Air have not been operating regular flights, causing significant problems for locals, including patients, students, and others who need to travel outside the district. According to Rara Airport Chief Shrikrishna Rijal, recent flight disruptions occurred because all aircraft were engaged in bringing tourists to the eastern region.
With Karnali Highway being challenging and risky, air travel has been the preferred option for Mugu residents due to its safety and convenience. However, as the highway has witnessed frequent accidents, locals opt for surface travel only as a last resort, making air service a vital lifeline.
Locals have urged airline companies to resume regular flights to Rara Airport. Despite being a popular tourist destination, Mugu has recently faced irregular air services, which have caused issues for patients, students, and others needing to travel. Currently, airlines operate only one or two flights to Rara per week.
Rara, known as Nepal’s largest and deepest lake, attracts numerous domestic and international tourists who often travel by road to visit the area and return by air. The inconsistency in-flight services has also affected tourists, disrupting their plans to explore the scenic Rara region.
