Janakpur Hosts International Maithili Film Festival

The International Maithili Film Festival commenced today in Janakpur, with Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh of Madhesh Province officiating the opening ceremony.

Chief Minister Singh emphasized the festival’s significant role in promoting the Maithili language, literature, and culture. He expressed pride in the quality of films being produced in the Maithili language, highlighting the festival as a testament to cultural pride and artistic achievement.

Veteran artist Neer Shah shared his thoughts on the festival, stating that it strengthens unity amid diversity and fortifies national solidarity. His comments underscore the festival’s broader impact beyond the arts, contributing to social cohesion.

The formal inauguration ceremony was presided over by Ramesh Ranjan Jha, President of Lok Sanchar. Other notable speakers included Janakpur Sub-Metropolitan City’s Deputy Mayor Kishori Sah, singer Sunil Mallik, and activist Vibha Jha. They all echoed the sentiment that the International Maithili Film Festival is instrumental in preserving and promoting the Maithili language, culture, and arts.

The festival features participation from renowned artists, writers, singers, and directors from the Mithilanchal region. This two-day event is the first of its kind since the implementation of federalism in Nepal. Held at Janakpur’s Girija Cinema Temple, the festival is a joint effort by Janakpur Sub-Metropolitan City and Lok Sanchar.

Three feature films—Lalka Paag, Lotus Blooms, and Samanantar—are set to be showcased during the festival. Additionally, documentaries such as Gumki and Vidyapati, and short films like Rakta Tilak and Afwah, will be screened. Ramesh Ranjan Jha, President of the organizing Lok Sanchar, provided these details.

The festival also includes discussions on Maithili cinema’s production, business, and contemporary landscape, aiming to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Maithili films and their cultural significance.
