Historic Discovery: Black Summer Truffle Unearthed in Portugal

In a landmark discovery, a black summer truffle has been found in Portugal for the first time, marking a significant moment in culinary and scientific circles. Chef Tanka Sapkota, renowned for his expertise in truffles, has unveiled this exceptional delicacy, confirmed by researchers from prominent Portuguese institutions including the University of Évora, the Higher Institute of Agronomy, and the National Institute of Agricultural and Veterinary Research.

The truffle, a sought-after commodity among chefs worldwide, was discovered after extensive studies conducted last year. Chef Tanka Sapkota, Executive Chef at Lisbon’s acclaimed restaurants Come, Prima, Forno D’Oro, Il Mercato, and Casa Nepalesa, expressed excitement over the find, which yielded approximately 15 kilograms of black truffle in and around Alenquer.

“This discovery is groundbreaking for Portugal. We have uncovered a remarkable quantity of high-quality truffles on our soil, contrary to previous beliefs,” Chef Tanka Sapkota remarked enthusiastically.

Pedro Folgado, Mayor of Alenquer, emphasized the potential economic impact of this discovery on the region: “This indigenous product highlights Alenquer on the map once again. Coupled with our excellent wines, this truffle could bolster local economies significantly.”

The truffle’s identification and verification involved rigorous scientific analysis by academic institutions. Dr. Celeste Santos e Silva from the University of Évora’s Department of Biology confirmed the findings: “Our molecular and microscopic analyses indicate that this is indeed the summer truffle (Tuber aestivum), marking its first official sighting in Portugal.”

Truffle hunting, an arduous task requiring trained dogs to detect the elusive fungus near tree roots, is likened to a sport for enthusiasts. The rarity and demand for truffles, traditionally cultivated in temperate climates like France and Italy, command high market prices globally.

Chef Tanka Sapkota, known for his mastery of truffles and Italian cuisine, aims to further explore the commercial viability of Portuguese truffles: “I have laid the groundwork; now, it’s up to governmental support to advance this process. I am committed to monitoring and fostering its sustainable cultivation.”

This discovery follows Chef Tanka Sapkota’s previous achievements, including presenting Portugal’s largest white truffle in 2018 and receiving the prestigious title of “Knight of the White Truffles of Alba” for his dedication to truffle cuisine.
