Annapurna Rural Municipality in Kaski has established and brought into operation a first-aid centre at Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) to provide immediate medical assistance to domestic and international tourists, trekkers, mountaineers and local residents visiting the high-altitude destination.

The health facility has been established at Ward No. 11 of Annapurna Rural Municipality, in coordination with the Nepal Annapurna Rescue Centre. The initiative aims to improve access to basic healthcare and emergency medical services in one of Nepal’s most popular high-altitude trekking destinations, where visitors can face health complications due to difficult terrain, extreme weather and high altitude.

Immediate Medical Support for Visitors at ABC and Machhapuchhre Base Camp

With the first-aid centre now operational, tourists and local residents travelling to Annapurna Base Camp and Machhapuchhre Base Camp will have easier access to basic medical care in cases of illness, injuries and other emergencies. Bishnu Bahadur KC, Chairperson of Annapurna Rural Municipality, said the facility would help provide timely first aid to visitors experiencing common health problems and emergency situations in the high-altitude region.

He said the local government expects the availability of health services to strengthen the sense of safety among visitors and contribute positively to tourism promotion in the area. “With the operation of the health centre, we expect health security in the tourism area to be strengthened and to make a positive contribution to tourism promotion,” KC said. The rural municipality said it has been prioritizing the expansion of health and safety services alongside infrastructure development in major tourism destinations within its jurisdiction.

Services Include Oxygen Monitoring and Treatment of Minor Injuries

The first-aid centre will provide a range of basic medical services to tourists and local residents. These include general health check-ups, blood pressure measurement, body temperature monitoring and oxygen-level checks. The centre will also provide initial treatment for minor injuries and wounds and distribute necessary medicines.

Given the high-altitude environment, the facility will also provide initial management of health problems that may occur in the region, including altitude sickness and breathing difficulties. The availability of oxygen-level monitoring and immediate first aid is expected to be particularly useful for trekkers visiting ABC, which is located at an elevation of 4,130 metres above sea level.

Focus on Altitude-Related Emergencies

Annapurna Base Camp is located in a challenging high-altitude environment where trekkers can experience altitude-related health complications. In the past, visitors travelling to the area have fallen ill due to high altitude, while some cases have reportedly resulted in fatalities.

The newly established facility is intended to provide an initial response when such health emergencies occur. Early assessment and first aid could help identify cases requiring further medical attention and facilitate timely evacuation where necessary. The municipality said patients suffering from serious illnesses or sustaining major injuries will be referred to health institutions in lower-altitude areas for further treatment, depending on the severity of their condition.

Facility to Support Emergency Rescue Operations

Bharatman Gurung, spokesperson for Annapurna Rural Municipality, said the first-aid centre would also support rescue and emergency response operations in the region. According to Gurung, having basic medical services available at ABC can assist during emergencies and disasters by providing immediate medical support before injured or seriously ill individuals are transported to facilities in lower areas. The facility is therefore expected to complement existing search-and-rescue efforts along the Annapurna trekking route.

Annapurna Rescue Centre Continues Safety and Rescue Operations

The Annapurna Rescue Centre, located at Machhapuchhre Base Camp, has been working to improve the safety of domestic and international tourists travelling along the Annapurna trekking route. The centre has been involved in emergency search and rescue operations, tourist safety and the use of technology to reduce the risk of accidents along the trekking route. The establishment of the first-aid centre alongside the rescue centre is expected to strengthen the emergency-response mechanism in the ABC region by connecting basic medical assistance with existing rescue and safety operations.

Health and Safety Seen as Key to Sustainable Mountain Tourism

The introduction of a dedicated first-aid facility at Annapurna Base Camp marks an effort to strengthen the health and safety infrastructure supporting Nepal’s high-altitude tourism. As ABC attracts trekkers from Nepal and abroad, access to basic medical services at the destination can provide additional support for visitors facing minor illnesses, injuries or altitude-related complications.

The rural municipality has said that expanding such services alongside tourism infrastructure is part of its broader effort to make the region safer and more visitor-friendly. The initiative is also expected to support the continued promotion of the Annapurna region as a major trekking destination while improving emergency preparedness for both visitors and local communities.
