In Chhakewa, Tyamkemaiyum Rural Municipality–4, the Armed Police Force (APF) of Nepal has reestablished its temporary camp following persistent demands and efforts from the local government and residents. The camp, which falls under APF-5 Gulmi (Bhojpur), had been removed in Bhadra 2082 as part of organizational restructuring.
After the Gen-Z movement, the removal of the APF camp raised security concerns among residents in Chhakewa and along the Mundhum trekking route, a region considered sensitive for safety and border monitoring. Locals expressed the need for a continuous law enforcement presence to protect lives, property, and ensure overall peace.
Security and Border Oversight
According to Divyaraj Koirala, Chief of APF-5 Gulmi (Bhojpur), while the camp was initially merged with district operations per organizational directives, current security considerations warranted its reestablishment. The camp is expected to be fully operational from Poush 19. Koirala emphasized that the APF’s presence is vital not only for border security but also to maintain public safety and order in the region.
The area surrounding Chhakewa also forms part of the border region between Bhojpur and Khotang districts, which further underscores the strategic importance of the camp. Saroj Basnet, Chairperson of Tyamkemaiyum Rural Municipality, confirmed that after continuous coordination from the local level to the central government, the camp’s restoration was successfully achieved. Previously, residents had provided five ropani of land to establish the camp, highlighting community cooperation in security initiatives.
Community and Tourism Safety Benefits
The reinstatement of the APF camp is expected to help control theft, illegal activities, disaster management, and ensure tourist safety in the Chhakewa region. Residents have expressed relief following the camp’s restoration, noting a renewed sense of security.
Rama Devi Rai, Vice-Chairperson of the rural municipality, added that the camp’s reestablishment would strengthen the overall security framework of the municipality. Given that Chhakewa is also a popular tourist destination, a permanent security presence is considered indispensable to protect both locals and visitors.

The successful reestablishment of the temporary camp reflects effective coordination between local authorities and central government agencies.
