Cathay Pacific Celebrates 80 Years with Commemorative Livery and Anniversary Programme

Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong’s iconic airline, has launched its 80th-anniversary celebrations with the unveiling of a commemorative livery on an Airbus A350 long-haul aircraft. The aircraft features the airline’s beloved “lettuce-leaf sandwich” motif and a bold “80 Years Together” badge, combining the classic green-and-white stripes with a modern design symbolizing forward momentum.

The launch, held at Pacific’s headquarters in the Mid‑Levels, included a display of vintage cabin-crew uniforms from across the airline’s history. Between 1,000 and 2,000 staff will wear the retro outfits throughout 2026, turning daily service into a living celebration of the airline’s evolution.

Honouring Hong Kong and Shared Journeys

“Today marks not just an important milestone for Cathay, but a celebration of our ‘80 Years Together with Hong Kong,” said Cathay Group CEO Ronald Lam. He highlighted Cathay’s role in countless journeys, from business travel and study abroad to family reunions and critical cargo deliveries, emphasizing the airline’s enduring presence in the lives of Hong Kong residents.

Lam also underscored Cathay’s ongoing investment in fleet modernization and passenger experience. Over HK$100 billion has been allocated for new aircraft, cabin upgrades, lounge refurbishments, and digital innovation. “Our refreshed vision is to become our customers’ most loved service brand while strengthening Hong Kong’s position as a leading international aviation hub,” he added.

Expanding the Anniversary Theme

The A350 livery is the first of two planned rollouts. Later this month, a second “lettuce-leaf sandwich” design will be applied to a Boeing 747 freighter, extending the celebratory theme across both passenger and cargo operations.

In addition to the visual tribute, Cathay will launch a limited-edition merchandise collection, inspired by historic liveries and uniform designs. The range includes travel accessories, apparel, and home goods, available online and at selected retail partners.

Strategic Brand Reinforcement

Industry analysts see the anniversary as a strategic opportunity for Cathay to strengthen its brand identity amid growing competition in the Asia-Pacific market. Aviation consultant Anita Cheng noted, “Celebrating heritage while investing heavily in next-generation products sends a clear signal that Cathay remains a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s connectivity.”

Ongoing Events and Community Initiatives

The airline has promised additional events, cultural collaborations, and community initiatives throughout 2026, all centered on the theme “80 Years Together.” These activities aim to engage employees, passengers, and the wider community, reinforcing Cathay’s commitment to its heritage while embracing the future of aviation.
