Hetauda Accelerates Its Push to Become Nepal’s Cycle City

The Himalayan Riders Society, Hetauda, has intensified its campaign to develop Hetauda as a “Cycle City,” promoting cycling as a means of sustainable transportation while linking it with health, environmental conservation, and tourism. Since its formal establishment in 2078 B.S., the society has been working with concerned government agencies and other stakeholders to improve cycling infrastructure and encourage a stronger cycling culture in Hetauda. As part of the initiative, dedicated cycle lanes have already been developed along four major routes from Buddha Chowk, extending roughly one kilometre in each direction.

Cycle Lanes Strengthen Hetauda’s Cycling Infrastructure

According to Society President Raju Thapa Magar, cycle lanes have been established from Buddha Chowk toward Kanti Lokpath, Karra, Chowki Tole and Rapti Road. The society has been advocating for cycle-friendly infrastructure to be incorporated into new road projects across the city.

It believes that dedicated cycling lanes can improve road safety for cyclists while also contributing to the visual appeal of the city and encouraging more people to take up cycling. The organisation has been working with relevant authorities to ensure that future roads in Hetauda are designed with dedicated space for bicycles. Such infrastructure could also provide visitors with a more sustainable and active way to explore the city and surrounding destinations.

Hetauda Moves Toward Becoming a Cycle City with Himalayan Riders Campaign

Cycling Promotes Health, Tourism and Environmental Sustainability

The Himalayan Riders Society has been using cycling to connect health, tourism and environmental conservation, while promoting Hetauda and other destinations across Nepal through cycling activities. The society currently has more than 160 ordinary and lifetime members, with cyclists ranging from 10 to 73 years old. The broad participation demonstrates growing interest in cycling as both a recreational activity and a healthy lifestyle.

The organisation has also been conducting tree-planting activities in Hetauda and surrounding destinations as part of its environmental initiatives. By promoting cycling as an environmentally friendly mode of travel, the society aims to encourage sustainable mobility and contribute to greener communities. Its activities also extend beyond cycling and tourism promotion. Under its social responsibility initiatives, the society has organised programmes including blood donation, eye donation and free health check-ups at different times.

With the continued development of cycling infrastructure and promotion of cycling-based activities, the campaign is expected to strengthen Hetauda’s identity as a cycling-friendly destination while creating opportunities for sustainable and active tourism in Bagmati Province.
