The Hyatt Regency Hotel, which has remained closed following the arson and vandalism during the recent ‘Gen-Z’ protests, is set to reopen soon after undergoing reconstruction.
Severe Damage During Protest
According to a statement issued by Executive Director Suresh Lal Shrestha, the regency sustained extensive damage during the demonstrations held on Bhadra 23 and 24. The incident affected key sections of the hotel, including guest rooms, reception areas, restaurants, banquet halls, offices, and religious structures such as the Chaitya. The overall structure suffered significant destruction, leading to the hotel’s complete closure since the unrest.
Reconstruction Underway
The management has begun the process of evaluating damages and initiating reconstruction work. It is estimated that the rebuilding and upgrading process will take at least one year before full operations can resume. The regency has expressed a firm commitment to restoring its facilities to international standards and enhancing Nepal’s tourism reputation upon reopening.
Commitment to Economic Contribution
Once operational, the hotel aims to contribute more effectively to national revenue and the broader economic development of the country. Management emphasized its intent to help revive confidence in Nepal’s hospitality sector and attract both domestic and international visitors once again.
Government Support Assured
Following the closure, Prime Minister Sushila Karki and Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal assured the hotel management of necessary government support to facilitate restoration and reopening efforts.
