The International Mountain Tourism Day 2026 Theme Events officially opened in Shennongjia, Hubei Province, on May 29, bringing together tourism leaders, policymakers, scholars and industry representatives from across the world to promote sustainable mountain tourism and the preservation of world heritage mountain destinations.
Held under the theme “Safeguarding World Heritage Mountains, Shaping a Sustainable Future Together,” this year’s program focused on strengthening global cooperation in mountain conservation, ecological tourism and cultural exchange.
Focus on Preserving World Heritage Mountains
The event adopted the theme “Preserving World Heritage, Sharing the Prosperity of Famous Mountains, Zhiyin Hubei, Mysterious Shennongjia,” highlighting the importance of balancing tourism growth with environmental protection and cultural preservation.
Representatives from international organizations, foreign embassies and consulates in China, tourism authorities, industry leaders, scholars and media professionals attended the opening ceremony.
Organizers stated that mountain regions around the world are increasingly facing challenges related to climate change, biodiversity protection and sustainable development, making international cooperation more important than ever.
Dialogue on Sustainable Mountain Tourism
One of the major highlights of the event was the “Dialogue among World Famous Mountains 2026,” where delegates exchanged ideas and experiences on sustainable tourism models, heritage conservation and responsible destination management.
Participants discussed ways to promote tourism while preserving fragile mountain ecosystems and protecting the cultural identity of local communities living in mountain regions.

Similarly, the Investment and Business Meeting for Mountain Culture and Tourism created opportunities for tourism enterprises, investors and destination representatives to explore partnerships and future collaborations.

Known for its rich biodiversity, dense forests and unique ecological significance, Shennongjia was presented as an example of sustainable mountain tourism development.
Organizers noted that hosting the International Mountain Tourism Day events in Shennongjia reflects China’s commitment to ecological conservation and the promotion of responsible tourism practices.
